OK, I obviously didn't use my Canon 350D for mine, so I added the digital camera in my equipment listing, then got a popup about the change made in 2004 regarding non-EXIF supported cameras and the camera choice was red with a strikeout.
What's the work-around? Leave it as my 350D?
Grandfather clause in effect for 2002 pics used prior to the change in 2004? This IS a retro-challenge after all.

From the discussion in here, if the camera you were using doesn't support EXIF, you're SOL. No exif, no entry. |

Wouldn't surprise me.
Submit a pic with a camera that "used to be" allowed, then on Sept.1st 2004, was deemed not longer useable from that date on, then call on pics taken back in 2002, then say they can't be used....
Whur's my lawyer....lol |

| I agree with Brad. Also have a camera that I was using in 2002 that was not compliant with the rule put in place in Sept. 2004. Several of what I consider my best photos were taken in 2002 with that camera. That's also when I started with DPC and some other sites and started learning about "minor details" like exif---actually that probably didn't happen until I got my present camera in 2003 (hope it's not becoming an antique yet). |

I agree with Brad and Kathyc but if we open the challenge for pictures without EXIF files, then there is no way of verifying if we follow the rules.
It's a catch 22 but I'm in my mind it only makes sense to only allow pictures with EXIF files.
This challenge has special rules and it's not relevant what was or wasn't allowed in 2002.
My opinion only...

| I agree that it's a "catch-22" situation, but it's not like loosening the standards here would affect other challenges. I think the question raised here is possibly something those who set up the challenge didn't really think about and perhaps should think about in the future if other challenges like this are set up. I have no objection to the Sept. 2004 exif rule for anything but this challenge (or any other that would be designed around "older" photos). |

| I did have my Powershot in 2002, and it does record EXIF, which I can see when I open the pictures in Photoshop. Unfortunately, I never did keep any "originals" - ie unedited pictures. I do have some favorites from then, but I realize I've certainly improved since then, too. :-) |

The crazy thing is that my top scoring photo was taken in 2002. I still like the photo - it is one of my top sellers for stock. But when I look at the editing, I really cringe.
I'm quite happy with what I entered for this challenge. But if it scores better than my recent stuff, I won't be too happy. I would hate to think that I'm getting worse, not better.

My old Sony Digital Mavica 640 x 480 had EXIF data in a .411 file association.
I hope someone has a reader for it lol.
There was no way of getting face detail at that level. :) But geez I have foound a lot of old stuff while looking its been great!

I just noticed that we already have 135 submission within only 18 hours, yet for the usual Best Of xxxx challenges we always have to wait TWO WEEKS!!!
I realize that most of us have more photos now per year than we did in 2002, but surely not two weeks worth of looking! |

Well, fresh from a high scoring DQ, no roolz is refreshing. :-) Managed to find an oldie without purple fringing, hehehe. My favorite dig photos from that camera were in 2001, not 2002, what does that say about my ability to improve?
And now back to digging out Canon software because there is no Adobe Camera Raw converter for the 30D yet! Maybe I shouldn't have used it on a gig yesterday... 8-* |

Nothing like a 24-hour challenge to spike the procrastination guns, eh...? (Mine was about the 13th or 15th in...)

Oh, you got me all excited, because I still have stacks of floppies from my Mavica in the basement. Then I did a google search. Actually the .411 file is the thumbnail image that the camera used during playback. I even found a site for some guy that wrote a program to convert them to .bmp files. Why? I don't know. But alas, still no EXIF. : (

Well going through my old pics from 2002 brought back some memories. Thanks D&L just for that. It also reminded me how bad cheap($500) digital cameras were back then. 1 megapixel, 2x optical zoom and 3 year shutter lag ;-)
I couldn't find a single pic I'd even think about submitting... interesting to see how critical I am of those first efforts. This is not just the camera's deficiencies, also the photographers... |

I'm in, this is Challenge #50 for me, is that suppose to bring luck? :)
I like my shot, even if it was taken with a 1.2 mp camera. It looks pretty good.

| Yay! I found just the batch of photos I was hoping to find and I still had originals! My Mavica FD92 did provide the EXIF data, so I'm now entered. *crossing fingers* |

until about a week ago, my primary camera WAS the one I had in 2002 :D

My photo's have a little tag EXIF when I use the free XnView program that is designed to be used with .411 files.
Its in all I can hope is that its ok because I'm not sure. BUT hey its pretty bad lol so who cares! Its all for fun!

Help! When I tried to list the camera as the Mavica FD92, it said it wouldn't allow it because it doesn't have EXIF...but it does! Or at least the same page that looks just like what I'm used to seeing with all the info.
I can't seem to copy that page to paste here. Any one have any suggestions? How do I do a screen save?

On a PC you capture the screen to the clipboard with the keys Shift-PrtScrn (usually next to the F12 key) -- then open Photoshop (or other editor), make a new document (PS makes the new doc the same size as the item on the Clipboard), paste and save.
On a Mac, capture the screen with Command-Shift-3 -- it will save it as a PICT document (OS 9 and earlier) or PDF (OS X) to the root level of your startup drive. Photoshop should open either of those for further editing.
If you are on a PC, get IrfanView (free), and you will be able to copy the EXIF data directly to the Clipboard and paste it into a text document.
