I am curious as to the requirements to use some of the filters in photoshop cs2. About 50% of the filter sub menus are grayed out. Are these filters for a specific mode?

I am most interested in the Filter > Texture > Grain which I never see enabled.

It depends on what mode your image is in. MANY of them are grayed out if your image is in Lab Color, for instance, or Grayscale. They pretty much all work in RGB and CMYK I think.

Also, filters will gray out depending on what layer is the active layer when you select; for example, you can't apply gaussian blur to a levels adjustment layer.

They won't work in a psd file, but will on tif & jpg.
Flatten and try or create a new layer and try it.

Some don't work if you are in 16-bit mode either.

Does anyone know specifically what needs to be set up for the Texture > Grain filter? Or Texture > anything as the Texture is disabled.

I always use TIF, I use Bridge so files initially come in as CR2. I have tried to switch to 8 bit.

pretty sure it is the 16bit that fotoman mentioned...convert to 8 and there shouldn't be an issue...well except for the loss in bit rate. I know I've got a couple actions that when ran on 16bit they would give an error message in grain and smart blur areas.

Say what? Of COURSE filters work on PSD files. I do all my work on PSD files. That's photoshop's native file, it would be crazy not to have the filters work there :-)

A good point was raised earlier; a LOT of things won't work on 16-bit files.

If working in 32-bit there is even less stuff available.

Well I was 1/2 right - the psd file I used as a test platform to check was a 16-bit file.
Oh well, I'm a dork - no news there.
