Look at the file numbers.
Unless they've been reset, or the sequential file numbering option has been turned off.
You might be able to measure wear on some components in the shutter mechanism itself, but I don't even know whare to begin with that.
Basically, you really can't.

I bet that somewhere, hidden in something, it keeps a record - even if just as a diagnostic thing.

Looks like you'll have to take it in to Canon to find out. I just emailed Canon Tech Support, asking if the 10D had the number of shutter actuations somewhere in the EXIF or in some other place where we could find it, and this was the reply (which was in less than about 15 minutes, I might add)...
"Dear Laurie Black:
Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon
customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
This information is not stored in the camera's EXIF data. I am sorry
for any inconvenience. There is no way for the consumer to access this
information.
We hope this information is helpful to you. Please feel free to contact
us again if you have any other questions or concerns.
Thank you for choosing Canon.
Sincerely,
Jason
Technical Support Representative"

Well this may or may not be helpful and only someone with your camera that has reset the counter can answer the question. But here goes...
The 20D saves files 0-9999 in folders 100, 101, etc. Images 10001 - 19999 in folders 200, 201, etc. My SONY had the same structure. I have never reset the 20D, but on the SONY when I reset the counter it only reset the actual file number back to 0000 not the file structure. So if I was on the 11,000 pic the counter would say 1000 but the file structure would save it in folder 2XX indicating it was actually the 11000 pic taken and not the 1000 pic taken. So...if the counter has been reset, has the file structure been reset as well? If not, the number of the folders the files are saved in in camera would tell you how many times it has gone by 9999. But as I said, the SONY did this and I have never tried it on the 20D and only someone with your camera who has reset can tell you the answer for sure. I am assuming here too that the 10D saves files the same way the 20D does. |
