My Water II entry started off freaking awesome...it is not at a 5.8somethingorother. First nights never really matter, but it is fun to watch sometimes!

Actually the first few nights do matter the most IMO. You start off with the regulars and they give you a couple of sixes and some 5's. Next thing you know the fly by nights come in and start handing out 2 and 3's. Next thing you know your average is at the low end of 4.xxx. It takes alot of 6's or better to bring that back up.

Had 7.5 after 8 votes so it has been going down a little. I'm of course still very satisfied. :)

again the DNMC police are out ..
complaining things are 'closeups & not macros'
Uhh.. ya right ...

guess it must not be an abstract if you can't tell WTF it is ..

sub 5 on a nice pic :(

Oh, silly me. I entered an abstract shot.
Didn't realize that when you add Macro to the challenge title, then abstract no longer has any meaning.
The majority of shots in this challenge are definitely NOT abstract.

Macro yes, just not abstract. Think I'll turn my scores off.

In my experience you can plainly tell in the title what it is and people still won't know.

Yes, I agree. I have just looked at the thumbs only and pretty much know what most of them are. Anyway, mine is not only a macro, but it is probably the most abstract entry in the challenge. Can you guess which one it is?

I agree. It appears that the masses are not voting for a abstract image but a macro. I was one foot away from my subject, took a small portion of that image and posted it. Recieved a comment that this was a close up and not a macro. Nobody on this site will actually know what this image is until it is over. After looking over the thumbnails, I see that a large portion of these images are not abstract. I am discouraged. I thought my image was very unique. I went thru the last few challenges for Abstract and there have been no images like mine. Oh well.

One of the comments says it was taken at a great distance. I guess that is a compliment to me. Knowing this voter had no clue. True abstract.

I am fairly new to this site, and am seeing a trend that is not pleasing. It seems that in most cases the rules of each challenge do not really apply, and that the voters vote with the "Oh that's shiny" mentality. There are a LOT of GREAT photographers with great submissions, however somtimes I feel that photos are just submitted without much regard to, again, the challenge rules. So for me, I will continue to submit by the rules of the challenge to challenge myself. I will vote accordingly as well. This isn't a "my scores are bad" rant, I accept I have a long way to go. However, the photographers that really submit great photos in a accordance with the rules seem to place in the top 50 and not the top 10.

(should have posted in another thread, oh well)

I have not gotten as many comments as I would like at this point. As for voting, I have scored more than %50 of the photos- I agree with an earlier poster that people are either forgetting the Abstract or the macro or both. There have been some phenominal MACRO shots but being readily identifiable they are not ABSTRACT. (To me if the subject is identifiable at first glance it is not abstract.) Pretty isn't quite good enough for me.

It's macro (1:1)...you can't tell what it is, and its a technically well-done shot with nice tonal range. What the hell?!?

If you give a crappy score, have the sack to let me know what I can do to make it better. I like learning, but I am starting to hate the random, annonymous bashing in the form of crap scores. Ok, I'm off my little soap box now.

Well at least I'm doing well on the abstract front; I've had one comment guessing what the picture was of, and they got it wrong :-)

I believe that some are under the impression that if you can identify it then it DNMC. When actually the details say "Take a picture so close up to something that it cannot easily be identified at first glance."

So if you know what it is after looking at it for a few seconds then I feel it complied with the challenge details. A "glance" is a briefly gaze.

No suprise here, following the guidelines for the challenge gets me no- where. The really funny thing is that all that Macros that look good but have nothing abstract about them will place higher then mine. Haha DPC can be such a joke.

P.S. PLEASE let the winner actually follow the guidelines in the challenge people.

An abstract form....something that looks like what it is not...people need to get over this idea that if you can tell what it is it is not abstract...that thinking is wrong

On some of the ones (I haven't been all the way through yet) that I felt were especially abstract, I tried to guess what they were... hope that's not annoying! (It's a lot of fun to try and figure it out) :)
Part of my problem with voting in this one is that some are so abstract that I can't tell if they're good, or if it's just *so* close-up that nothing comes out clear. With those, I've skipped over 'em and will go back and try to study them when I have the chance.

I personally try not to vote lower due the DNMC thing because in my opinion, art is so very subjective. Unless it's so blatantly not applicable... I mean, if the challenge is "Candle Light" and someone submits a picture of a deer, it's a lot more difficult to make the connection. I just figure that there's no way for me to see exactly what the artist saw, so there's no way for me to say that there's no chance that the entry could possibly meet the challenge. (Technical challenges aside for the most part).

Well, I am most likely the one most people will skip over because even if you knew what it was, you still would be puzzled. Guess I went too abstract on this one.

Well I don't know that you can be too abstract... Just because I can't figure out what it is doesn't mean I'd score it low, personally. If I can't identify it, but the image is still appealing, I wouldn't score it lower. :)
03/29/2006 12:16:01 PM · #48
My current score is around 4.8, as of 11:00. It has only had 37 votes so far, but I am pretty certain a lot of people are going to look at it after the challenge in order to find out what it is. I have learned that the word appealing may be my main problem overall. My yellow entry will be very appealing, and I am sure the score will reflect that. Anyway, I expect to score in the bottom 10% on this one, perhaps even the bottom 5%. Such is life. After viewing the shots, this is the appealing shot I should have entered, but as usual I chose the one I liked the best, not the one voters would like the best.

Oh Yeh, now I know why I didn't enter this one. I had done advanced editing on it. Didn't have time to reshoot it for basic, because I took this one really late on Tuesday.

It was over 5.0 at one time, and I was very happy--it's still above any other entry I have had so far (except one that got disqualified), but just barely. I hope it stays there. The one comment I got on it so far said they gaved it a 7 and said that they loved something about it...so I guess that's good. I just wish I'd get more feedback on it.
