down a bit... i may not be abstract enough for the people who think it's DNMC if they can figure it out w/o asking, but i didn't think it was overly obvious, as i've seen with some of the shots...

it is certainly macro enough...

Well.. my entry committed seppuku overnight. It was a 6 and I went to bed with dreams of glory, now.. it skulks about as a weasely 5.lownumber. On the bright side, it garnered a favorite. That is worth many points.

Smilebig4x: You have the biggest heart of anyone here in DPC - no doubt! And that's really what counts. I'm sure you'll do well with time.

Now here is the interesting part...I just bought my new 20D, unpacked it and took a quick shot in time to make the cut-off for this challenge. It is an upgrade from my point an shoot cameras and I am already exceeding my best prior score with the old cameras (and this shot was hasty with no particular planning). What does that tell you about the importance of a decent camera? ...and I can't wait to really use this camera. It's a whole new world for me.

I should rename mine to ying yang. Started out very well then tanked. Now it currently sits at 5.48. Would be nice to get at least one comment. Grrr...

up a tad and a few comments... none of which say it's not macro or abstract enough...

I've been climbing a bit since yesterday but don't expect to go up too much.

I choose a picture which I felt was more abstract to meet the challenge, but technically could be much better. Everone I've shown it to couldn't guess what it was, and isn't that part of the challenge? So now I wonder if I should have submitted the picture that wasn't as abstract but technically much better. Strange how this voting goes.

What's the point of sharing the rating ?

However, in this challenge I haven't seen many good shots. So far I remember 4 of all were up to the standard. And some people still are getting 7+ ratings. May be I dont know the site well enough.
03/30/2006 01:14:04 PM · #64
Score = 5.7 with 14 comments. 13 of which say it's not very abstract. I love it!

I went off the so close you might not recognize it at first glance description. I guess I missed though. I'm happy with the score and most of the comments say great shot but not very abstact, so no complaints here.

My score has been lack luster lately but someone added my image as a fave. That's worth all those shots I took to get this image! Thanks!

I'm over 6, two folks have told me they gave me 9's, and I'm ecstatic!
I waffled over the one I submitted and one of a feather, and now see almost the exact feather pic submitted, angle, colour and all. I'm glad for both of us my daughter recommended the other, because I'm sure we'd both have suffered simply for doing the same thing.

I'm such a doof. As I made my entry at the last possible minute I didn't look at the image after I uploaded it before the voting began. I just figured out what is causing my awesome 3.25 score.

...

I uploaded the wrong version of my image. DOH! (insert the sound on Homer Simpson here)

Oh well. I guess I'll just have to live with it. I'll learn to submit my image a bit earlier and double check it.

I'm pretty chuffed, especially seeing the quality of some of the work. wow. i guess i need a amcro lens, hmm? only so much you can do with a stock zoom and high resolution, for good cropping...

hey, beecee... do i recognize yours from earlier experiments?

edit - checked your blog, beecee. yup, thought so. looks great, gave you a 6 on first run through, but will probably bump you up (and, no, not just 'cause i like you!)

It was over 5.0 at one time, and I was very happy--it's still above any other entry I have had so far (except one that got disqualified), but just barely. I hope it stays there. The one comment I got on it so far said they gaved it a 7 and said that they loved something about it...so I guess that's good. I just wish I'd get more feedback on it.

Up a little bit. It's been yo-yoing a bit between 4.8 and 4.9.

With regard to this Abstract Macro challenge I have a comment and a question:

I have noticed that there are more "Macro" than true "Abstract" however what bothers me the most is that there are so many in B/W which I feel does not lend itself well to the Abstract theme. These included some good concepts and compositions which just lost it for me simply because they were in B/W - colours lend so much to the Abstract idea. I based my judging on - if it was a painting and in a gallery would I buy it, I have not worried about what it is or anything else.

As I am new, I am also interested it where everyone's "base line" is when they vote i.e. what is your starting point for say average - mine is 5 with a 7 for exceptional and a 3 for mediocre.

Has anybody gotten a higher score than this without 1 comment? I doubt anybody could say this isn't abstract or macro so I guess there is nothing to say? :(

I know what you mean, seeing the possibilities... I want lenses!!! (lots of 'em, allll different sorts)

And yup, I played with lots of different shots, but daughter really liked that idea and suggested I reshoot it, so a few refinements and ... voila! And thanks soo much for the complement :D
