I'm going to Sedona next week for a few days and I've been twice before but, this time I'll actually be staying in Sedona over night for the first time. Does anyone know of a particular spot I might go to to catch a really great sunrise and sunset? I'n hoping for one of those once in a lifetime shots but, I'm not familiar enough to know where the best place to catch one is. Anybody familiar with the area?

Never been but Steve Davidson might be a source of good information.

PM Steve- he's always willing to help. You could also ask Daryl Loudog who's been all over AZ. :0)

Steve and I just caught a great sunset view of Cathedral Rock from near Rd Rock Crossing. There was an entrance fee of $7 per vehicle, but well worth it. The location was off of the Red Rock Loop west of town. It was a short walk back to a creek with an awesome view of Cathedral Rock. Highly recommended sunset view.
Also highly recommended are the indian ruins at Palatki and Hananki, both of which are located west of Sedona off road 525. When you pick up your "red rock pass" which entitles you to park and take pictures (yes, they really require a pass for this) you can pick up a detailed map of the area that will show these locations.

Edit:
Here is a link to some pics I recently uploaded from the Sedona expedition and an earlier hike in Hieroglyphic Cyn.

Courtesy of the same folks that named so many Tuscon boulevards for infamous crime figures!

Beautiful shots Kirbic, and thanks for the info on where to get that Cathedral Rock shot. I'll be there too in 1 1/2 weeks! That one was on my list, I just didn't know where/when to get it.

Hey, I'm going to be back in AZ in 10 days too! We're there on family vacation from Apr 08-15. Staying in PHX area.

Great photos Fritz. I like your take on my tree :)

Cathedral Rock from Cresent Moon Park is the setting sun shot everyone needs in their portfolio.

While there I recommend the hike to Devil's Bridge

and/or Vultee Arch. I'd also strongly recommend Hiking at least the first 2 miles of the West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon. This is my favorite spot in Sedona (but I haven't been there since I've been into photography). My second favorite spot is a secret spot (but a longer hike).

Cool! Those are the same dates of my family vacation. I'll be in Sedona Apr 8-10, then off to Santa Fe and White Sands for a few days, then back to Tuscon for a couple days (13-15th). I was looking at Out of Africa for some big cat shots, but not sure if we'll have time since we're only there one full day. But it might be a nice outing for your family and it doesn't look TOO far from Phoenix.

Well I went yesterday to Sedona and yup it's still there. I'd tell you how amazing it was but unless you actually go there there aren't words in any vocabulary strong enough to come near the beauty of Red Rock. I took your advice and paid the $7 and you were so right. After an 1/8 mile hike we found a spot with a couple of ducks sitting out on a rock in the middle of this water with the reflection of Castle Rock. WOW. Had to wait for the water to settle a few times from some kids skipping rocks (Some people just don't get it) Anyway when I get them processed I'll post a few. Thanx for the recommends.

Lost in Sedona

(edit spelling)

I'd love to see your shots! I'll be there Saturday and I'm real excited. Quick question, would 28mm (at 1.6 crop) be suffiecient for the Cathedral Rocks shot with the water? I've been meaning to get a super-wide, but I don't know now if I'll have it in time for the trip so I might have to use what I got.

That's plenty I used a 20-80 2.8 and managed very well. Good luck.

I used a 24-70 on FF, and I was not at the wide end. I think I was around 35-40mm or so, so your effective 45mm might be pushing the long end a bit. Certainly it would be plenty wide for a 2- or 3- shot portrait-oriented pano :-)
Hope you have great weather, Steve and I got a wonderful sunset after a mostly-cloudy day. Good luck!

Cool, thanks for the replies. I was thinking about dipping into the "fun money" set aside for the trip for this lens, so I think I'll wait and keep the wife happy. I was hoping to do some pano's anyways. Thanks again Nick and Fritz. (and sorry for hi-jacking your thread for a bit)
