Several voters on my image for Fill Frame, asked why this was challenged. I suspect it was because of the very unusual set of events where I had gone to the Atlanta Botanical Garden the Saturday before this competition closed to find an entry for In The Garden and saw this neat pot of Venus Fly Traps...took the shot and entered for the Fill Frame competition. That same day, another member (Kevin Riggs) whom I did not know, shot the same image, the same pot, the same day and also entered in Fill Frame competition. I would have thought it suspicion also...but for the statisticians out there...what are the odds?

That's amazing! I saw both shots when voting, and ass-u-me-d that they were from two family members. That they were from unrelated DPCers unaware of each other's shots is mind boggling.

This is REALLY amazing! Chances of hitting the lottery are better I think. A similar thing happened to me in a challenge... Me and someone else entered a shot of the exact same clock although not the same type of picture, but it was still kind of strange seeing his/her entry! |

It also happened in the road signs revisited challenge. There were two entries with the same sign showing directions to "hell".

and also in a challenge where two people shot the same car show full of "General Lee" look-a-likes. Except I think the two members may have been related?

I and someone else submitted virtually identical Lychees for the Fruits and Vegetables challenge, and Isaac and I once used the same set-up for our Egg shots, but neither of us did it very well .... |

Aurora and I submitted shots of the same cygnet (hers, mine) for the fauna challenge. Mind you we were stood a few feet apart at the time! (Amazing how close the scores ended up too).
Having a complete stranger submit a shot of the same subject is too freaky.

Hey, you know what?
I have been questioning if other DPC folks have been sneaking into my house and taking pictures of my beautiful Golden Retriever, Churchill. So many times, amazing images of Golden Retrievers have shown up in challenges that look exactly like my dog.
But then, I do think that all dogs do look alike, just like all flowers are the same to me. I have never been known for my attention to details. But, it does make one wonder...?
Maybe I will change the locks just to be safe?
[I have a photographic memory that was never developed]

I was going to mention that it happened to me, but someone already mentioned my road sign entry. I drove for 2 hours to take a pic of the ONLY road sign pointing to Hell Michigan. Only to find out that someone else also took the same shot. And actually, after I saw it, I saw that their footprints are actually IN my shot. Definately Freaky. The weather was horrid that day, and the sky was pure white. No color at all. |

Because my photo is in one of the current challenges, I can't give details -- but someone else had the exact same vision I did this time as well -- though I am sure the subject wasn't the "same" subject. They were just doing the same thing : )

What is really strange is that it also happens in other art forms. I was reading a book about cartooning and the number of submissions of the same subject drawn essentially the same way, but different artists. (When elevators where first introduced the heaven and hell symbolism, and a more recent example of the 90% depletion of the fish in the ocean showing small fish being eaten by a larger fish) Photographers have even more of a chance of echoing each other, since now we have basically equal access to different subjects. Plus can be inspired by simular articles, photographs, books, etc...
Just my two cents. |

There was a thread after the Speed challenge. A photo was posted on photosig that was almost identical to Diversq's winning shot - taken of the same jet, at the same air show, within seconds of each other. So, not only the same subject, but at a single moment in time.
On the comics thing, I used to read a lot of comics, and it was amazing how a bunch of cartoonists would all get the same idea and do a strip or even a series on the same subject. And not always on current events, but sometimes on esotaric topics. |

Oh, yeah. Um. Sorry. That was me. I thought that since we were both DPCers and all that that gave me special permission to do so....
