I've had my 20D for a month or so now, and I've shot RAW the whole time. It's never occurred to me, but the files seem a little light so to speak.

I thought the RAW CR2 files were going to be approximately 8.7 MB, certainly ~8.2MB. But, I've only had files from about 6.6MB to 7.2MB, a far cry from these other figures.

What gives?

It depends on the dynamic range of your image. If you shoot a gray card in raw, the file should not be bigger than 1-2MB. If you shoot something that has full range of colors, the size should go up in the 7-8-9 MB range.

Makes sense. But I've shot some pretty colorful full range images, still no dice.

Maybe some of the parameters?

No, nothing else affects raw size (all parameters are affecting the jpg only).

I skimmed through my images, and 90% is in the range 6.5-7.5 MB. The biggest I ran into was 9.9MB, and that was a shot of two old ladies in the Dallas Zoo, with a pretty colorful tree in the background. I may post the image soon so you can compare it to yours.

That'd be great! I guess I'm barking up the wrong tree here. Thought maybe my camera was crippled or something. (Shucks, it must be me STILL!)

Here:9.9MB raw file:

Edit to add: just raw conversion (CS2 picked auto settings), image resize and save for web, not even a USM.)

Mine are all in the same range as this. Just today I downloaded some photos of some bright pink trees blooming, and they were in the 9MB range, but that is not typical. For what I shoot, 5-7MB is typical.
