I find several pictures in the current garden challenge to be too small. How about having an minimum sum of height and width requirement in addition to the minimum dimension requirement which is already in place

I agree with you. I brought this up a little while ago and the consensus from that discussion was not to change that and instead let people express their opinion with comments and votes instead.

I totally agree with you. The images are much too small. The guidelines are to allow - mostly - for panoramic type photos.. (so that they can be longer on one side, and short on the other).. but too many people misinterpret this as "let me submit a 300 X 300 photo." I vote accordingly, and comment that a larger image would aide in the process.

An additional minimum requirement (say, 500) for at least one side would stop people from feeling compelled to vote and comment on photos that are too small. I still think everyone would benefit from a minimum constraint. The person receiving the votes and comments won't get 10 comments on the size and virtually none on the photo, and the voter could focus on the content of the photo rather than the fact that it is too small and not much is visible.

Having said that ... I've tried to suggest it and it didn't go down too well ... so I won't be trying to argue the case for it again.

Should there ever be a poll on this I'd definitely be voting for a minimum size. :)

I totally agree on increasing the minimum size a little.

One thing though, it seems that the smaller pics tend to be lower-end cameras.. If photos are too small to submit, would people simply scale up the photo to match the size? This could result in some painful large but zoomed in photos!

That's where this tutorial comes in handy.

Since I'm no good at math ;) I just picked a random 0.7MP camera from the camera list and checked it out ... it creates 1280x960 size photos. So even that camera should be able to create sufficiently large photos for the competition, even with a bit of cropping.

What about a 550 or 500 max size. This way when we vote, all the photo is shown on one page.
Just a thought

1280 * 960 = 1,228,800 => 1.3MP

Or that's what my old digital camera sold itself as (with that size pic)! :-)

I take your point though - it's only for fairly heavy cropping that it would become a problem. Or as my friends would say, not enough "manual zoom" :-)

It sounds like you need to bump up your monitor to a little higer res if you can't see a 640x picture on your screen.

If a picture is 640 pixels high not all of it is shown on a 1024 x 768 pixel display. The window title bar, menu bars, etc all take space.

I told you I wasn't any good at math ... LOL. Still think my point is valid though :)

I had this problem until a week ago. I've been using a monitor with a maximum display of 800 x 600 pixels. Now, with my new monitor, I'm finding even full size photos (640 pixels in one direction) rather small.

If you're using IE, hit f11 and you'll be in full screen mode. Not sure how to do this in other browser.
