I am thinking of making the jump to a DSLR. One of my main concerns is battery life. Please share the model of your DSLR and the number of photos or minutes/hours before you need to change/recharge the battery. |

Rebel XT... usually around 400+ with flash.
Easiest way to double this is to buy an extra aftermarket battery for $9.99.

D70s I don't know I have never run it down. But if I have to guess 1500 to 2000 images with no flash less with a flash. I have a vertical grip that lets me put 2 batteries in there so the batteries last forever.
EDIT: I found this.
"EN-EL3a, 1500 mAh, very slightly better than D70's EN-EL3 (no "a") rated 1,400 mAh. The D70s is rated for 2,500 shots no flash, 500 shots with full power flash every other shot. "

20D gets about 600-700 pics - battery life is awesome! I have an extra battery, but only ever use it when doing all day shoots (i.e., walking around San Francisco, etc.) |

D70 - at least 800-1000. Seems like it lasts a week or more unless I'm doing lots of shooting and and chimping or it is very cold. I carry an extra battery but seldom have to change out in the field.
edit: BTW - my D70 has much better battery life than my old Fuji 4900 had. I think as a rule DSLR's do better than P&S in this department.

D70 - I don't have a good hours or shots per battery estimate as my shooting frequency is rather sporadic, but it definately seems to last for ages. Much longer than my old C-2100. The flash (onboard, that is) is the only thing that wears it down much.

20D - Last summer I shot 12 soccer games, averaging 600 pictures per game for a total of 7200 pictures, in one day, with 3 batteries.
I normally would have had IS turned on, but I used up my first battery in only the first few hours of the day and worried that the other two batteries wouldn't be enough. So I shot the rest of the pictures without IS that day.

Far from being a concern, I think that you'll find in general that DSLR batteries last for more shots than most P&S cameras. Not using the LCD for such an amount of time helps.

My 300D goes 350+, or 7+ hours. Not totally sure as I have not measured it -i just know from experience I have shot a wedding (7-8 hours) on one battery - the camera was on constantly for that time, just under 300 shots, no flash and a good bit of LCD use. About 2 weeks ago i shot another wedding, 420 captures over 5-6 hours and i did change the battery part way thru just to avoid it dying at the wrong moment.
The 30D ad materials claim 750 shots on a charge. It, the 20D and 350XT have the newer Digic2 circuitry that is supposed to be more effeciant.

Canon 300D - from the manual...
Normal temperatures: no flash = 600 / flash 50% of time = 400
Cold/freezing: no flash = 450 / flash 50% of time = 350
From experience....
Continuous on and happily firing away w/o flash for about 4 hours. I have two rechargable battery packs and have never missed a shot in a day of shooting for want of power. (Just remember to plug the recharger in before you turn in for the night. :-)) |

7200 photos in one day!!! That's 15 photos a minute over an 8 hour day! My goodness, that is what I call a full days's shooting! |

Yah, I second the D70 comments. It seems to last forever. In fact, I can't remember the last time I charged it. I think it was a month or two ago.
In contrast, my Nikon Coolpix 3200 with NiMh rechargables takes about 25-30 pictures and then it starts giving me the low battery sign.
Hence my extreme satisfaction with the D70s dSLR.
Good luck.

It was closer to a 12 hour day, but yeah.... you get the 20D going at 5-frames-per-second and suddenly you've got a lot of pictures!
The hard part is sifting through that many pictures and deciding which ones to post online.
We have 3 days of shooting this weekend (Lacrosse) down in Las Vegas, but there will be three of us shooting this time. I kinda doubt that I'll beat that number, but who knows... |

When I go on my little safari's (usually a week to 10-day shoots), I have two 10Ds with me, each of which with battery grip. At the end of the day I plug in the charger for the next day and put in, at least, the two batteries of my primary camera.
I'm so used to it, I forgot how long a battery lasts and how many pictures I can take between charges. It has also happened that I forgot to charge altogether, only to go into the next day without worrying about it. It just is no longer an issue. |

Me too. No matter what I do I can't drain battery during a single day. Flash or no flash.

Yeah...the D70 has an incredibly long battery life. I hardly had to charge it....maybe once a week.
The D200 isn't nearly as long lasting but I'm still playing around with the menus a lot.

The P&S I am currently using gets about 60 shots from 4 AA batteries. Thanks for all the info everyone. The cost savings of batteries alone is worth buying a DSLR. |

OK, I've just got a p&s, but I have yet to run the batteries down in it and that shocked me. I have a buddy that has a Canon P&S and he went through 4 sets of batteries (2 AA) in the day and I used mine for the next day and a half before I thought, better safe than sorry, and recharged them.
Total picture count...346
I know, I still can't believe it.

Two years ago we purchased 4 Rayovac 15 min rechargable AA batteries for the Canon Powershot A80. They were only about $15.00 and still hold their charge like new. |

I own a Nikon D50 and on one charge I get about 300 to 400 shots per charge. I'm sure I would get more shots but I can't seem to remember to turn off the camera. ;-)
I also have two batteries because I can't seem to remember to turn off the camera. I would recommend getting a spare battery if you decide to get a DSLR.
