I entered this image into the "Square-crop" challenge, and I REALLY STUFFED-UP BADLY with this entry..... I have learned a VERY VALUABLE LESSON HERE, THATS FOR SURE.....
I realized that I "over processed" way to much, so as to get it into the challenge on time. NEVER AGAIN WILL I DO THIS.....
I took it on the day of roll-over, so maybe rushed it.....
I entered it within about 2 minutes to spare, and this is something I will NEVER do again.....
PLEASE don't judge me on this image alone, but visit "my portfolio" to see what I have learned and hopefully you will see other images that are much better.
I feel quite ashamed, and I would like to put my head in a brown bag, along with this photo.
Thank-you for your time.

Don't worry about it, everyone has submissions that do poorly. Heck, most of mine do even if I like them and didn't overprocess at all. |

Maybe post the original and have a "how would you process this?" session. Could be fun. |

Good lessons learned Shez! Speaking of overprocessing, ehem, I've been known to do that as well ;)
edit: Don't want to appear to hijack your thread. just posting an image so lessons can be learned as well. Mayb I suggest you post your original and possibly a re-edit so we can comment? Thanks.

Done what you asked re the above.....
I have had the WORST WEEK POSSIBLE IN MY WHOLE LIFE, WITH SO MANY MISTAKES.....
First this, and then had to asked if one of my entries should be withdrawn, and now have my first "disqualification" for another stupid mistake....
I have been really so un-well this week, as the Doctor says I am close to have phenemonia, as I have a severe chest infection. Maybe if ever like this again, just look, but don't enter.
I was very close to leaving "DPC", but I can't, as I "LOVE" it so much.
I will just have to put things into perspective, and maybe take some time out for awhile.

no worries Shez! things can be worse ;) as far as taking a break, I suggest most people should do it. it's quite refreshing and you come back rejuvinated and full of vigor.
i've had my fair share of DQs for stupid mistakes. one of them even cost me a 4th place finish. but keep one thing in mind, this should be for fun.

"THANKS" Rikki, as I take heart to you kind words.
I just think it maybe be because it is due to "my health", as that was one of the main reason why I didn't join for such a long time. I "LOVE" this site, and would be LOST without it.....
What did you think of my origional.....re this thread.

Well take care of yourself first, but stick around and the main thing is not to let the scores or even a DQ bug ya. Like Rikki said its just for fun. I have made tons of mistakes, and I stick my foot in my mouth about half the time. But, they aint kicked me out yet. :)
And you are fun to have here, so stick around. |

The original I agree is by far better than the edited version. However, it lacks contrast. A bump in the contrast would help. Now in as much as a bump in the contrast would definitely help, there isn't much visual appeal in the image to keep your audience interested. I don't want to sound mean or anything but for us to all continue to learn, I think we need to hear these things or else we'll keep on doing the same mistakes.

No need to hide, it happens to all of us sooner or later. :) You learn WAY more from a brownie than a primary colored ribbon.
Just breathe, relax and realize that in the grander scheme, it doesnt matter so much. Nobody remembers that you got the brown, it doesnt really affect your average all that much, and you learn a lot in the process.

You're already one of my favorites, so definitely not judging you on this one entry. Everyone has bad times.
Especially with health problems. It sucks, doesn't it, how that can just affect every area of your life? Really discouraging when you can't enjoy something as much because of what your body's doing to you this time around.
Like people are saying (but ultimately you are the judge of course), time off may be helpful. But if you find DPC at least a little enjoyable, don't go away forever. Do what you love, keep up that great attitude, and that will help you feel better emotionally, which can in turn boost the physical feelings a bit.
Don't be ashamed. You're a great photographer, and if someone doesn't ever look at your portfolio, choosing instead to focus on a single image, it is their loss.
If you decide that time off is what you need, I will miss you and look forward to your return. Will say a prayer for your chest infection.

Sherryl,
I hope you are feeling better.
I've looked through the images in your portfolio and I like them. My votes on them have been pretty consistently higher than the averages you have received, especially on the Square Crop image. I've left you comments on it and on the Odd Couple image.
In both cases, I think the images would have been better if you had turned off your flash. Fill flash can really help a photo when it lightens shadow areas that otherwise would be too dark. But when the flash becomes the dominant light source in an outdoor scene, the photo loses the natural feel that it should have.

Other threads have talked about how unfortunate it is that we get to practice a shooting a subject or a special technique for a week, and then move on to the next shiny object that comes along. The good thing about the weekly challenges is that if things don't quite go your way, it's only been a week and you can move right on to the next challenge. You've taken a good attitude about this one, learning from your mistakes instead of just complaining about a low score. Reflecting on your own work and learning from mistakes will only make you a better photographer (even though the work in your portfolio speaks for itself). So... it's off to another challenge for you, and I'm sure your scores will be back up in no time! Hope you're feeling better soon! :)

hehehe, that must be one of the most common mistakes people initially make! Sharpening is good. Massive sharpening must be gooder! ;-)

This won't be the last time that happens - I gurantee it. :)

Next time try getting it in there in the last fifteen seconds or so - it's much more exciting! :)

Crikey, Shez! You've got much to be proud of and nobody judges anyone around here. It's like one big Eutopian family. ;-) Well, ok there are some black sheep, but I won't point them out.
Have fun, don't lose heart, live & learn. Hope to see lots more from you. |

Shez, firstly...you look after yourself, you're an important part of this family!
You have some very wonderful shots in your port. And please don't ever feel ashamed.....can guarentee most of us have a few 'special quality' shots in their challenge ports LOL My brown ribbon contender :)......and I can't even claim it was a last minute shot! Cool kitten though, even though he did end up in the tank with the fish once, and broke the glass top of the tank in the middle of the night!
Look forward to the next day's shooting, the next challenge....and above all else, look after yourself *hugs*
