From the peanut gallery:

Technically, boss (from the Dutch word "baas") can mean "master".

Carry on.

Well if your wearing Nike or most other big name clothing brand, or have ever shopped at Wal-mart, you are supporting child and slave wage labor. So yeah, its still very present in American life.

migrant workers whether illegal or not is not slavery. When was the last time we forced migrant workers to enter the country get jobs for low or any wages and held them at that job against their will.

Sweatshops may take advantage of people, but it isn't slavery. These people are willing to work for what we think is peanuts because of their current economic situation, not because we force them to work. Working for pennies is still better than not working at all for these people, it still puts some food on their table. It is immoral for businesses to use people like this to lower manufacturing costs, but that is another debate.

Has to be one or the other. Everything will have an absolute truth.

History appears to disagree with you. Or do you assume that when slavery was legal, everyone knew it was an absolute truth that it was wrong but just went along with it ?

If it's immoral for the businesses to use people like that, is it also immoral to buy their goods ?

Wow thanks to everyone whp replied...It is true that this could have never happend, but since this was a 3 page thread i think it was a good question...I am personally happy that slavery ended mainly because i like all the things i have and can do, of course i cant say that i like the government we have, but you cant win them all...

Yes! That's why fair trade goods are important and, whenever possible, the boycotting of goods made by or distributed by companies that employ slave labour is paramount to stopping this form of slavery. Once their behaviour is public knowledge they are pressurised to doing something about it. On the other hand, taking work to cheaper countries is not necessarily a bad thing.
