with all the new models arriving I was wondering on the resale value of these cameras given the age the increase in technology, and the fact these cameras are worked harder and take more photographs than film cameras.
With these facts is it wise to buy 2nd hand?
cameras like the canon range ieD30,D60 ? probably also include the 300D and 10D
prolly all other makers as well
any ideas? |

In theory, the price on used ones drop. But there are still lots of folks, like yourself, still wanting one and not affording the new ones.
I think the advances have slowed - my 300d is 2 1/2 years old (from release till now) and the 30D is newest - there are definitely improvements, but nothing tremendous.
As for price drops... there will be mroe used ones on the market as people upgrade, but in this case that might mean 20d's more than rebels.
I am surprised to see 300Ds still at $500+ on ebay, and 10Ds at around $650. I don't plan on selling my 300d, unless it is to get a 20d - i am gettign a 30d and if i can't stand my 300d ater that i'll trade up.
should i put you on a waiting list?

Sometimes you can find good deals and other times you can't. My 9-month-old 350D sold used on eBay for more than I paid for it new. Personally, I'd rather have a 350D than a used 10D or older model. The speed and other improvements found in the newer models makes them easily worth the price difference for me. I've seen Dell offer the 350D with kits lens for as low as US$664, but I don't know what kind of deals you can get in NZ. |

This just means that the market for used 10Ds and 300Ds gets better and better (both still excellent cameras) and now you'll start to see more and more 20Ds and 350XTs on the used market.
IMO, the used dSLR market is outstanding right now. |

Isn't it the glass that's really where the money is? I can't remember what your film camera was but the lenses on that is going to control just about every decision isn't it.

I'm waiting on the Canon 60D to be announced, so I can sell my D60 on the back of the confusion. Given that it is currently selling for around $300 on ebay, I'm hoping for some sort of surge :)
Bought for over $3000, now worth $300, 3 years later.

Yes, but technology has leveled a bit. The 30D is less a move form the 20D as teh 20D was from the 10D. many claim they'll stick with the 20D and not upgrade at all, so the used market will not get flooded and this will keep all used dSLR prices a but higher.
Also, the 60D was $3000. the 30D is 1/2 that and you get a lot more for the money. So wait three more years and for $750 you'll get something like the 1Ds Mk2! Of course your current 1D will be worth only $300 then too. ;)

yes I can see how the market is heading, I am in fact almost settled on a KM 5D as I locked into the Minolta fim system,
I can get one new with the 28/75 F2:8lens for $1800NZ.
I dont know how this compares with your prices .
I guess my concern is, howc long beforec this model is redundant? and how much value will it drop over the next couple of years

Isn't that now owned by evil Sony. I would jump ship myself. Canon is the future.

Who gives a damn who owns Konica. Sure Sony has some pretty draconian practices in business ethics, but it's about the camera.
The KM 5D plus the 28-75 is a killer mix.
I can get the 5D with kit lens for like 25000 NT which is a little less than 1000 Canadian dollars. If I were you, I'd probably go with the kit lens plus the Sigma 70-300 and if I felt that the 18-70 really wasn't good enough, switch to the Tamron 28-75. The Sigma is an extra 200 dollars over what you would already be getting, but there's something really nice about paying 200 dollars to be able to shoot 70-300 AS.
Otherwise, I'd probably spend my big dollars on a 100mm prime macro or something. Don't forget, the retail price on a Nikon 100mm F2.8 VR lens is probably more than the 5D plus 28-75 plus a 100mm prime macro.
A couple of things to remember about the 5D is that in-camera sharpening is reportedly less, so use that to your advantage and make sure you pay attention to post-processing.
Further, the sensor ought to have very slightly larger photosites than the 350XT, so you get a bit more detail beyond the f/16, f/22 range.
Also, it comes with a 1.5x crop range, so you will probably also be quite happy with a Tokina 12-24 if you want to do landscapes (see above reason).
You will be really happy with that mix Kiwinick.
It's what I would have done if I hadn't wanted to play with 5 fps and my friend hadn't come along selling a really cheap 80-200L.
