My Contrast entry did pretty badly, so I'm keen to find out why.

Only one comment out of about 205 votes! There may not be much to say about it but was it that bad?

I didn't finish so far ahead only 86th..

Personally I just found the image confusing.. What is real and what is reflection? The fact you can also see the square lines of the windows also adds to this confusion.. What were you contrasing? The glass and the steel presumably.. they look interwoven more than contrasting..

all IMHO of course.. maybe that helps?

So the confusion was a negative? I wanted people to wonder where building finished and sky began as part of the appeal in the image, despite meeting the challenge brief with the contrasting materials.

Thanks for the feedback.

The image shows contrast but I didn't find it subjectively appealing.

That wasn't the confusion you gave me.. The confusion was which is the real steel and which is a reflection.. I also really wanted to know what the building really looked like but couldn't work it out.. I have a logical mind and I think this irked me..

From a very laymans POV the image looks too cluttered with too many intersecting lines

I didn't find much appeal to this image either. I gave it a 4. As far as comments go, I didn't really have much to say about it. I agree with the cluttered perception. I don't find any strong challenge ties to it. It seems to be missing a real focal point. I really like geometric patterns and lines and things like that, but this one really didn't have any appeal for me.

I know what you mean about not getting any comments. Check out my one comment during the challenge on this one. Heather was nice enough to leave me one a few months after this one was done. //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=10067

I think what this really needed was a center of attention/focal point. But what do I know?

That was some comment Bob!

I can beat that - I got a '???' for my Trends entry.

What are the thoughts on this one (which scored a lot higher than mine) for Contrasts then?

I looked at it. From the voting layout, I'd say that problem wasn't that the photo was necessarily bad, just indistinct. I didn't vote, but I would have given a 4.

From my point of view, there really is no composition - the eye has nowhere to rest or be drawn. There's nothing to *look* at, in particular, in the shot.

And, for the record, 86th isn't a bad placing; mine came in 111th. :->

Thanks for all comments - very helpful.

For the record Eloise, I'm not moaning about placement rather than trying to assess voting trends and opinions. Although if I didn't want to achieve better results I wouldn't be a true DPCer. :)

In defence of my composition I would have said that a focal point would detract from the deliberate (although clearly not popular) intention to cause confusion through the complexity of the structure. Adding a defined place for the eye to settle would deliver context removing the illusionary quality of the viewpoint. I didn't think it would do well to be honest as it just doesn't have a 'wow' factor.

I'll bear all the points in mind next time and try to shoot a flower or some piano keys! ;)

eloise, can I ask a question.. I commented on your picture.. Why did you choose not to mark my comment useful whe it's very similar to the one above which you did mark? I'm not upset, angry or any such, just curious really..

The other photo you pointed out has a very strong center of attention in it. It has a lot of processing done to it, which shows, but also gives the background a very interesting feel, with some of it bright green leaves and some greyscaled leaves, which I'm sure not so coincidentally fall on either side of the bright yellow flower. I think its a pretty normal flower shot, but with a little extra twist with the color/no color thing.

That's my take on it. BoB
