Last summer the shelter I work for was under renovations. At my boss' request, I took pictures during the renovations, and again when they were finished. Now, someone wants to write an article for the paper about us and the renovations, and they want my pictures. What are my copyrights in this situation? Can I say they can only use the pictures if I'm given credit as the photographer? |

hrmm...did you get paid at work while taking the pictures, and have some agreement to hand over the copyright to them?
Otherwise, you can tell them whatever you want. You could say they have to give you $4000 and write your name on a billboard if they want to use your pictures, if you didn't already somehow give away your copyright -- which I don't know, I'm not a lawyer.

Of course. You can even charge a little for the pictures, depending on how big the story is. But if you look at pictures in papers, they usually say "photograph by...such and such" you can defenitely ask for credit. |

Seems to sum it up. |

Depends.
Did you use your own equipment?
What's your normal job description and did you get paid for your time?
What sort of employment agreement do you have? For example, engineers generally have to sign away thier rights to inventions, except those created on thier own time and with thier own resources (material, computer, etc). |

Did your boss request you to do it on company time as a work for hire, or did your boss verbally contract with you as an independent contractor?
(In any case, you can certainly ask for a credit line and you'll probably get one.)

She just asked me if I would mind taking my camera over to the shelter and taking some pictures, which I did.
Photography is outside of my normal job description here. I was off the clock when I took the first set of pictures, and I don't remember for the second set.
I don't think my boss would object to my getting credit as the photographer. |

I would give them the photos and ask for a photo credit.
