I need help here, as you might have seen on a previous post
//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=352725
I will upgrade my equipment soon, I feel completely lost about the lens(es) that I should buy.

The only lens that I have (as I haven't been able to sell it) is a Canon 75-300 HSM (pretty cheap), apart from that I would like your advise as of what lenses should I choose for my new Canon 30D (ooops I hope my wife will let me go for that one).

The truth is I have never ever bought a lens, I read a lot that some lenses are MUCH better than others, I have even looked up for reviews on several lenses.

As I have been reading this thread //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=353022 I am reaching to the conclusion that a possible setup would be:

1) Canon 30D with 17-55 EFs package $1,499 (to get the wide end)
2) Tamron 28-75 at $379

Another possibility is:

1) Going for the Canon 20D as it will be less expensive
2) Tamron 28-75
(Where should I put my money, the better camera body or the better lens?)

Another possible setup would be:
1) Canon 30D body only
2) Tamron or Sigma 18-200 at $389

What would you do?. My new camera seems to start getting very expensive... :S and I guess I will see a great improvement over my 300D and cheap Canon 28-80 4-5.6 III lens, no mather wich one I choose.

Thanks for your help

30d upgrade isn't that substantial so you could pick up a used 20d for around $850 and get the Tamron 28-75 (or hold out a few months and get the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8). The 30d is just too much more than a nice used 20d for me to justify it.

Well, I don't know. He's got a Canon DSLR already. When I look at Patrinus' port, I see some very fine photography, which does not strike me like someone's fading fad or a mere hobby. The 30D, for Patrinus, may just provide actual improvements on his 300D and features he'll likely use, particularly the spot meter (,although i admit the bias as I'm leaning this way myself).

As to lenses, I'm only going to recommend one for now as, really, I don't see any options for what it is: the Canon EF 70-200mm L f/2.8 (non-IS). This, IMO, is a universally useful and fast telephoto which can be combined with a 1.4x without any quality loss and also without sacrificing critical speed in f-stops. I do not not know of any better glass and consider this lens an excellent value.

IMHO...

You currently have a Rebel. This is what I suggest, get the 30D. (You get spot metering and a fair number of additional features.) Then sell your Rebel for $400 or so and you can get the Tamron lens.

I've always been taught, and I still whole heartedly believe that the lens is more important than the body.

I say get the Rebel XT and the Canon 24-70mm 2.8 L

You'll be 100% happier than with a 30D and a cheapo 3rd party lens

(ducking for the onslaught of disagreement)

the (any) 18-200 is not good glass, so try and avoid it.
The Tamron SP24-135 is great glass at $400. get it.
the tamron 28-75 2.8 is also great, but less range and at the wide end that is a biggie.
You're better off to get a 12-24 tokina or wait and see about the tamron 17-50 2.8 - it should be very good. I have the sigma 18-50 2.8 and having fast and wide glass is good, you need range too.

as for long..either the sigma 70-300 APO super 2 or the 70-200 2.8 (for $800 but less than the canon equivlent and just as good).

As to the body...I am getting the 30D, spending the extra money (and waiting) over the 20D. Partly because I don't want to buy an already outdated camera when my next body may be 18-24 months off. Buy a 20D now and you'll want to upgrade that much sooner - i think the savings are a fallacy in logic.

There is a big step up from a 300/350 to a 20/30 in many subtle ways (durability, focus system, FPS speed, ease of use, custom functions, etc).

I'd recommend the 30D. It has many features that 20D users wish they had. It's a few hundred dollars more than the 20D but I think they are worth it.

If you are interested in the best IQ for the bucks, I'd recommend the XT as it has the same IQ as the 20D/30D, and put the rest toward glass.

As for lenses, I'd recommend an ultrawide and a normal range zoom such as Sigma 10-20DC and a 24-70 EX DG Macro. Both of these lenses would cost about $900 and the XT would be abot $760 or so, so you can get this set up for about $1700. I wouldn't recommend a 17-55 and a 28-75 as there is a hugh overlap in coverage and since the 17mm is not extremely wide.
You'll see when you try a 10mm focal length.

If I were you, I'd spend my money in better glass and put off buying the 30D. I don't think it justifies the extra $$. It is "almost the same" camera as the 20D with a few added features that won't make as big a difference as a good lens will. Like the previous poster said, you can even go for the XT and better L glass and be happier. IMHO.

Stick with your current body, and instead spend all the cash on really good 'L' series lenses. The difference will bring new life to your current setup and will still be good for a long long time, way past when the 30D has been superceded.

To be honest this is how I've gone about it. I bought the 10D and then started to save for the 100-400 L, then the 16-35 L. I might upgrade to the 5D, but really it doesn't do everything I want, so it might have to wait for the '3D' or whatever drops into the space between the 5 and the 1 series ;-)
