I won an auction and will soon be the proud owner of my first DSLR!

I've been watching them and pricing them for a long time. I'm not 100% sure about the lenses, but I can always resell those and pick up something more appropriate for me if needed - but they will get me started.

Here's what I got: EDITED to add price - $800

Canon 10D (about 2000 acuations)
Canon 550EX flash (also said there's a cord for using quantum battery pack)
Sigma 70-300 5.6
Tamron 28-80 5.6

4 batteries, charger, all manuals, original boxes for the lenses.

Yippee! (I think) That is a bunch of money for me. I will have to sell my 717 in order to finance it, but I think it will be worth it.

The guy is letting me wait to pay until I've sold my 717, and he is okay with using escrow (I'm paying). He had only 1 feedback (which was positive) so I really needed to use the escrow for my peace of mind. The listing didn't use a stock photo, but had photos of the actual items...so I think I'm good.

I hope I got a good deal.

Yes, it is an Ebay purchase. My 717 is now up for sale on Ebay as well. Just be careful buying cameras on Ebay. Cameras are a main target for fraudulent listings.

Yay! Welcome to the canon club! I'm sure you'll love the 10D - at least I know I love mine... Have fun!!!

Welcome to the good side! The good guys wear white you know.

Don't ask, you can't afford them LOL and neither can I (yet!)

I had to scrounge to get the money for my Rebel Jan 4 2005. 13 months later I got lotsa toys and things - you will too.

$800 seems like a real nice deal. And only 2000 shots? Like new! I have almost 7000 on my rebel now and I'm a babe in the woods compared to my friend emmanual - he rang up 110,000 on his 10D!

I had over 15,000 shots on my 717, so I'm sure I'll be ringing up the shots pretty quickly. I have forewarned my family that I will probably be quite a grouch for the first couple of weeks while I relearn everything for this new camera.

Just start out in aperture priority mode, since you have a nice background and knowledge in photography...Basically if you want lots of DOF, stop it down and if you want low, open it up -- You'll soon learn the limits, and how things work -- then just concentrate on learning all the controls. Honestly, I wouldn't even read the manual until after I played with it for a while -- or check out dpreview or steves-digicams -- they really walk you through all the features of the camera bodies ... I learned stuff from those sites that I skipped in the user manual.

yes, you will. but it will be well worth it. dp gave you some good advice.

i'd also advise you to learn how to shoot in RAW. it takes some time and some computer power, but it will help you fix your early mistakes and give you some valuable learning experience.

woo woo!

I went from the 707 to dSLR. First thing I noticed is shutter lag - there is "none" for you now. I nearly dropped my D70 when I tried continuous mode. Second thing, I had to learn to look through a viewfinder again - that's probably the biggest downside - I miss the tilt! But you now have lots more options to play with - it's worth it.

I found the manual very useful - especially the descriptions of all the menu options. I learned a lot about photography by figuring out some of those options.

I almost always used the viewfinder on the 717 vs. using the screen. I know the viewfinder is different on the 10D, however I am used to holding the camera that way for composing, etc. I think I WILL, however, miss the tilt body.

Sounds like a smart transaction to me. Good luck selling the Sony.

Uhh, Ebay? escrow? Those 2 words raise flags to me right then and there... Make sure the escrow site is legit, alright?

reminds me of the p-p-p-powerbook story. url=//paololluch.wordpress.com/2006/02/02/scammer-gets-scammed/]Scammer gets scammed[/url] or zug.com/powerbook

Just watch your back, and Good luck

We used the "Escrow.com" site that is recommended on the Ebay site. (The escrow was MY choice, not the seller's) In all my Ebay transactions, I've only had trouble once - and that was my own fault for being greedy. The escrow was expensive - cost me just over $50 so that I could pay quicker with Paypal and receive the camera more quickly - but it boiled down to peace of mind and so I figured it was worth it.

I also....save every single email I send to the seller and that I receive from the seller and I print out a copy of the auction listing. Hopefully it won't be any problem, but I try to cover myself as thoroughly as possible in case there is.
