I just read this in an Uncle John's Bathroom Reader, so take it with a grain of salt, but I found it fascinating all the same. ;)
If you could shrink the world down to 100 people - keeping the same ratios - there would be:
51 females, 49 males
57 Asians, 21 Europeans (14 from the Americas), and 8 Africans
70 nonwhites, 30 whites
70 non-Christians, 30 Christians
50% of the wealth would be in the hands of 6 people - all in the US
80 living in substandard housing
70 would be illiterate
50 would be suffering from malnutrition
1 person near death, one near birth
1 with a college education
Not one with a computer
Any thoughts? |

Interesting and thought-provoking for sure. ;^)
No computer? I wonder how many of the 100 would have a TV?

I'm very surprised that it is 6 people holding 50% of the wealth.
I would have thought it was a much lower figure.

This particular edition was published in 2004, so like I said, grain of salt. ;)
If you're not familiar with the Uncle John's Bathroom Reader line, I HIGHLY recommend them all for interesting bits of trivia and all kinds of knowledge you never learned in school. :)

Yes, but this might balance things out a bit in favour of living somewhere other than America/Europe... //neweconomist.blogs.com/new_economist/2006/01/happiness_the_h.html

As of 1998, the top 5% in the USA had 59% of the wealth.
And that amount has only risen in the last few years.

Very interesting stats. Had to laugh at "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader". Never heard of it. Is that something found in Texas only? ;) |

No, you can find them at most bookstores I believe...or on their website at //www.bathroomreader.com
They do sound rather southern, though. ;) |
