That's quite general! You might want to post what your interested in... i.e. Point and Shoot or DSLR, and also what kind of price range your looking to be in. That should narrow it down to start.

The Canon Powershot S2 IS is a well-regarded point 'n shoot with a 12x optical zoom. I think that's about as much reach as you can get without going the dSLR + long tele route. 5 Megapixels, available in the mid-300-dollar range. At the long end it's equivalent to about a 430mm telephoto on a "full frame" camera, and it has image stability built in.

I second the S2 IS, I have the S1, and the S2 is worlds better! But if your on a strict budget, the S1 still has the impressive 10X optical zoom, and you can easily upgrade it later (like i did) with Canon Tele-converters, Wide angel, and macro lenses! |

Can you do all of those upgrades with the S2? |

Yes the accessory lenses screw on the end of the camera. The link that I have attached has the camera and the accessories.

Panasonic has just released a new camera in the FZ series, they have a 435mm (12x) Leica lens and image stabilzation. I believe the newest one comes with 8MP although you can get ones anywhere from 4MP to 8MP. I personally have the 4MP one and I love it. Very easy to use, long lens, great image quality, runs on a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, and aren't all that expensive. They accept various 55mm accesories onto the included adaptor such as filters, extra lenses, and a lens hood (also included). The higher up models also have a manual focus ring on the lens. Any of those should fit within your $600 budget. Just thought put something other than the Canon out there, it is a great camera though. But give Panasonic a try, you won't be disappointed. Have a look at my website if you want some examples of shots taken with the FZ4 model.

I second SamDoe1's Panasonic recommendation. I have the FZ5, and love it. They've announced a FZ7 with some upgrades to the FZ5 but I haven't checked it out because my FZ5 is plenty for me. Check out my portfolio for some examples. Great zoom, image stabilization, nice for macro use and good size. |
