I'd either try noise-reduction software, or a tiny bit of blur -- either Gaussian, or maybe a motion blur (like 1 pixel) at 90 degrees to the lines (probably, as you say, from printhead misalignment/clogging, though it could also be a video capture or poor scan). |

In PSP there's a noise reduction filter called 'Deinterlace' that's supposed to remove horizontal lines. Never used it. Just a thought. ;^)

Ok. I need suggestions on how to handle the hair.
before
so far
There's not a lot to clone from and matching the texture/lines seems important.
(By the way, do the flowers look awful?) |

can you use the hair on the right and rotate it for your line on the top? |

Maybe. It's a lot lighter in color, though. I didn't think it would be harder than re-inventing flowers....thought I saved the easy part for the end. Must be too tired to continue tonight.
All suggestions welcome on any part of this pic. (And, yes, I do plan to lighten things up a bit and do the usual crisping of the image--hope I'm not wrong about doing that at the very end!) |

Whew! I'm seeing spots and little furry animals... I think it's time to call it quits. I did get my second image close to finished... Please take a gander at it and point out what I missed... thanks!

Originally posted by ladyhawk22: I haven't tried them yet, but I have some tips straight out of Photoshop User mag:
For fixing brown spots in photos:
Choose Select:Color Range and drag the Fuziness slider all the way to the left and then click on a spot. To preview what PS will select, set the Selection Preview pop-up menu to Black Matte and turn on the Invert checkbox. Press and hold the Shift key and clikc on additional brown areas until most are covered with black.
Now adjust the Fuzziness slider until you find the highest setting that keeps the spots isolated from the rest of the image. Before clicking OK, turn off the Invert checkbox.
Now choose Select:Modify:Expand, use the default Expand By setting of 1, adn click ok.
Choose the Patch tool, and click in one of the selected spots. Drage the selection to a "clean" area of the photo, which will copy the clean part and retouch the spots while blending the result into the colors that appear at the edge of the selection.
*Or, at least that's what they tell me ;-) Again, haven't tried this, but I wanted to help those who are already working if I could* |
Thanks... Looks like a good suggestion to try out. I will.

Here is something that may help. When restoring a picture find the color channel that has the least distortion or damage (see picture below). By doing this you will find it easier to restore the picture.
NOTE: THE FIRST PICTURE IS 'RED CHANNEL', 2ND IS 'GREEN CHANNEL', AND 3RD IS 'BLUE CHANNEL. As you can see it would be best to work in the red or green channel on this photograph.
Hope this helps,
-SDW
EDIT: BTW there has been no restoration done to this photograph just discarded the bad channels. When that has been done, one can complete the restoration easier. |
Thanks for the heads up. I'll take a look at that. |

Hello DPC folks!
THANK-YOU for the amazing turnout of volunteers! I have just gotten resetup here in Virginia after returning a few hours ago from the long car trip!
If you haven't received photos yet, don't worry... they're on their way (or a reply of some sort). I'll keep plugging away until I reach you all!
All of your tips are great!
We've found that copying a section into a different layer and flipping it horizontally, putting it to a lesser opacity and using a light eraser on that layer to blend the edges is a good way to help with parts such as matching the color of a cheek-sking-tone, background, trees, clothing, etc. Also a good one for hair.
Also, just do the best you can. Underdoing it is better than overdoing it on most photos.
The ones I'm getting back that I was able to send out yesterday are looking great!!!!!
When it comes to something like removing grain or noise, don't worry too much about it... most of that was on the original photo before it was damaged. Just do the best you can.
If you feel like the images you are getting are too easy, let me know... i have plenty of more difficult ones! Just trying not to overload anyone too quickly.
Also, I'll be keeping track of emails for updates about the future of Operation Photo Rescue!
More to come,
Becky |

So, count me in too!!

Yay! I got my packet of shots this afternoon. I've finished my first one and attached it below. Anything I missed?
It figures that I'd get one where I have to rebuild the back end of a horse/mule! LOL I started to ask if anybody here had any experience with that, but then thought better of it... ;)
BTW: Becky said that this falls into the "medium" difficulty category for those of you wondering.

Another question... Does anyone know whether we should send these back one at time as we finish them or wait until we complete the packet and send them all together? Thanks. |

I sent the all back together... I figured they can't send one back with out the rest of the images for that partucular person... Less hassle for them, and me... |

Looks good! I don't think you missed anything at all. You did loose some definition in the shadows, but that might be due to the compression for web. |

I got an email from Becky very early this morning. They are trying to get the packets out as fast as they can, there are a lot of volunteers, and they are trying to reply as quickly as they are able. :) |

Great job. Don't forget the area of the background inside her braid though.
I got three moderately difficult ones, and I've done the first. I didn't get it 100%, but hopefully, close enough. I'll post it later.
