After reading some comments in the current voting on the Contrast Challenge. I would like to suggest some further reading.

The details for the Challenge were:

Details: Take a picture that demonstrates contrast, where one element is differentiated from an other by light, structure or other compositional approaches.

Also this is from a photographic glossary:

Contrast:

Without contrast, there would be no such thing as a visible image; a line in a photograph is visible only because it is either darker or lighter in tone than the background; every distinguishable part of the image is the result of a contrast in tonal values.

I just thought after reading some comments and looking at the entries, some of us may want to freshen up on the terms and details.

Now the way I understand it, especially after reading the clip above from a photographic glossary. Is that all images MUST HAVE contrast to be visible

So I would take it we vote on the photo that best shows the use of contrast whether it be low, medium or high contrast am I correct?

i think it's a pretty wide open challenge, as there are so many different kinds of contrast and approaches to them. If you like the picture, chances are that is because the contrast in the image worked well. Some went for a very obvious, and sometimes literal and meaningful connection to the theme while others stuck with the visual idea of contrast in lighting and tones in a natural situation. They all work well for me and I think a lot of the images in this challenge are really great and take very different approaches to the topic.

I would be voting down images with very low contrast. Higher scores for stronger contrast (of course, this comes into play with every challenge).

I see my score plummeting (no comments yet). I expected it to be canned, yet I believe it is an excellent photograph. Its doing much better than I expected still. I'm judging the voting/cometitions on this one as much as they're judging me.

I couldn't agree with you more.

I don't think we can vote a photo down because it has low contrast though? If we read the Challenge Details:

Details: Take a picture that demonstrates contrast, where one element is differentiated from an other by light, structure or other compositional approaches.

A photo could have low contrast yet still be a very high quality and high scoring photo correct?

There are a lot of good photos and this is going to be a tough vote :)

sorry, I was just referring to contrast of light. If someone say, had a flower growing out of the concrete, well those seem to contrast. There would surely be lots of takes on it.

I understand.

The following is from the glossary on Nikons' website.

Contrast:

The apparent difference in brightness between lightest and darkest areas of an image. Usually refers to the gradation between black and white. Fewer gray values are described as "high contrast." Many shades of gray is low contrast.

Just one more thing to consider.

Don't get me wrong, I am not unhappy with the voting. I am pleased.
I was just a little confused by a comment that was made by one of the voters. It showed the voter did not have a grasp on the challenge or possibily photographic basics.
