So I hooked up my first professional gig: photographing at the Polish Chopin Bal at the Ritz Carleton in Montreal.

It's this saturday, so i went there tonight to test the lighting. Found a nice location for portraits which I will take at first. The problem is the bal room. I have to photograph the dance choreography for the opening ceremony...

I placed two SB-600 flashes about 20 meters from my camera and used my on-camera (SB-800 which bounces off the ceiling) as a trigger. But the SB-600's only respond if I point the camera flash directly at them, otherwise the light simply doesn't get to them! So basically, their useless, what should i do?

I thought of placing my SB-600 on my shoulder or something to at least get double the power for ceiling bounce, but the light signal isn't strong enough once it comes back from the ceiling... it works 1 out of 3 times.

Any suggestions?

PS: with the SB-800, my exposure with ceiling bounces is about F5.6 at ISO 640. That's not good enough... either noise or too shallow depth of field.

Can you use PocketWizards with the SB-600's? They're a bit expensive, but I use them with my strobes....

That or hardwire them together so the triggering is all done by wire. You'll have to run a wire between all the lights, but that's the most reliable way to trigger them.

You might look like a dufus, but maybe you could use a piece of white card taped to the back of the sb-600 and bent over it a bit to bounce the flash. That way it doesn't have to travel so far and will give off a stronger signal to the other flashes. Wouldn't cost anything to try it out.
