I'm having a hard time with comments that suggest I should make major changes to my image in as far as composition or removing a major element. What the Heck don't people read the rules? Constructive criticism is what̢۪s needed not "You know what I would do..."
Sorry just a bit frustrated.
Best Regards

I don't want to share my score right now, but don' worry...it's not at all spectacular. It's actually a lot lower than what I had expected....

Isn't that part of what Constructive Criticism is?
Afterall the rules do state this..
"After voting, you can add more comments on the photograph and see what others said about the photograph as well. As this site focuses on learning, please keep all comments constructive. Try to help the photographer with comments like how to improve the work or how to make it more appealing. Leaving comments also helps your own photography skills, as it teaches you to look at your own work more critically."
If you have an idea about how to improve the work, is it not something that "you would do" to improve the shot? |

Help would be making statements like; " The image looks a tad over sharpened" or I think cloning out the zit would make it easier to look at." that is constructive criticism not " I would have used a bald guy instead of that hot chick." that̢۪s what I am talking about and tell me where in the rules does it say I can remove a major element in my image?
Best Regards

Criticism goes beyond suggestions for post processing and blemish removal. Composition and elements of an image are especially fair game as that is what is making the image what it is. If someone felt that there was something in the image that wasn't working that is their right to do so and it is still being constructive as that is their opinion. As long as they are not just saying "that sucks" with no explanation as to why there is really no need to complain. Just remember...it is just someones opinion...doesn't mean they are right, but you should consider what everyone says and ignore comments that you find to be unhelpful.

So had I said in regards to your great winning phobia image that you should have used a man instead of a woman in your image, is constructive criticism? Just trying to understand where the artist begins and the objectivity ends. |

And yes, the one comment was a " what I would have done..." comment. IMHO I treasure any negative comment, or suggestion of what others would have prefered seeing, they are more usefull than "great shot" or "cool". When the comments get too close to the bone I try to imagine that I am at a gallery where my work is hanging and I am getting a chance to eavesdrop as two people look at my shot. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, The only thing worse than bad comments are no comments at all.

Weird. That means you got 2 votes at -5 each
I had 39 votes at 6.3846 and on the next refresh had 40 votes at 6.225. That means I got a vote of 0
or, got a vote and someone adjusted their vote drastically downward.
or, the system is messed up |

bouncing around - been down to the 5's at one point from a 7+ last night. As we approach the 100 votes I hope it climbs a little ;-)

The "what I would do" comments should stick to what is already present within the image itself. It shouldn't be about changing major elements of the image.
"What I would do" should be about...
Lighting
Angle
Cropping
Color saturation or desaturation
among other technical aspects.
I also find it acceptable if something is "missing" from a shot that could complete it. For instance, a plain portait might call for a colorful scarf or other accoutrement to give an image more life, all without radically altering a major element of a photograph. Adding an element is a constructive criticism.
There was a series of shots posted here sometime ago, the first one had a field with a lonely tree in it. The next shot had the same field, same lonely tree, but included a fenceline that just wasn't in the original shot. I didn't have a chance to see the first shot, but the comments on the second mentioned how something was "missing" from the first shot and including the fence in the second shot greatly enhanced the image. |

Looks like about par for me... :-) I'll take it. Went out on a limb (again) and will probably pay for it, but I like trying new things. |

I thought I had a huge downfall since yesterday night, but compared with some other horror stories reported above, it seems I am doing reasonably well for a monday morning :)

But that's OK as I have three challenges on my home page right now and the other two are 6.2 and 6.5! Can't complain too much.
