I wondered if I'd end up here. I got my DSLR, but now I'm wanting a P&S to go with it, for all the times that I don't feel like carrying my Rebel with me (or don't feel it's safe to bring it with me!). I'm doing my research to find one that I like, but hoped that my DPC family would add their $.02 and let me know which they like, and which are lemons.
My criteria:
-I'm looking to stay with Canon, but also checking out Oly and Sony. Open to other suggestions, too
-Prefer 5 mp or better
-I'd like one that used CF cards, so I wouldn't have to buy new media, but I have a few SD kicking around, so that would be okay, too.
-Manual settings: I want to be able to control as many factors as possible
-Batteries: I like rechargable best, but how to AA-sized NiMh compare to the SLR Li-on? If it's gonna eat AAs, then I'd shy away from it.
-Dependible, reliable, with good quality images lasting through it's lifetime.
-Budget: Cheaper, the better. I'll check eBay once I find a model I want. But the upper limit is going to be about $300

Check out the Canon S series. My first camera was an S-30. Small enough to carry around, but has all the manual settings. It uses CF cards, and has a rechargeable battery.

bump
I'm looking at and liking the S-series, but am still interested in other opinions.

I still have my Sony 717 for back up and for something lighter when I'm on the run. You might look at the F828.

I have an old Sony that runs on a rechargeable battery pack, LiIon....so much like the SLR where you pop the whole thing out and plug it in. Which I LOVE. I'm pretty sure that some of there better P&S cameras still run with that kind of battery system.

I shall comment on the Pentax Optio 555. There are newer versions in the line, including I beleive a 7MP version. The biggest annoyance of the Optio is that it does not have an orientation sensor so that you need to manually rotate any photos taken in another orientation. I am not sure how it compares to other p&s cameras in terms of shutter lag. I suggest looking at //dpreview.com/ to compare whatever cameras you're looking at, assuming you haven't already.

5MP, there are newer models in the line that are higher resolution.

I belive all of the Pentax P&Ss are SD, including this line.

Full manual controls and you can save images in a lossless format.

It uses its own Li-ion battery.

I've had mine now for about three years I'd guess. It has survived much skiing and travelling around the US and Japan. It has a few scratches on the lens now, but it only seems to cause a little flaring in certain situations as far as I can tell, and was my fault. Everything else is still solid.

No idea what it's going for now. I've seen it still for as much as I paid, might be able to get it cheaper or a newer model at similar price.

Fujifilm S5200...about $290.

I currently own the S5100 as an option when I do not want to have my Rebel 350 out.

This photo I took from a canoe that I was afraid might tip in the water with my dSLR equipment.

Check out the Canon A-series as well

I have the old Canon powershot A70 (you'd be looking at the A510 ro something like that), and love it. I'm not sure what the new ones run on though in terms of batteries and cards. Mine ran on AA and CF cards and did quite well. Plus you can get a little telephoto or wideangle lens attachement if you want.
