I'd like to know just how everyone gets these amazingly crystal clear images to stay that way. My biggest problem is that an image may look totally perfect on my computer but when I upload it to a challenge and go look, it's all messy. :/ Suggestions? I use PSP Studio right now, though will soon be switching to either the regular PSP or Photoshop..

What do you mean by all messy?

Well smooth lines are no longer smooth.. they're choppy as if I did some super-sharpening. The image loses a bit of depth and it just isn't as clear and clean as it looks on my computer.

does not sound possible, since they ought to be similar photos?
is our submissions being resized (in bytes) when displayed on DPC for voting? I do not think so...

Maybe something's lost in the save.. I don't know, and I don't really know how to explain it better..

It sounds to me like jpeg compression is the culprit. There may be an option for jpeg quality you can play with.

Have you taken a look at this DPC tutorial?

I can not say in your case, but I by chance discovered the same thing. I use to do my processing on my laptop just to discover the difference when it came to processing using a decent monitor. I am so sorry for all the pics I gave low scores due to my monitor, but I do suppose the same must have and still is happening to this day, not everyone uses a calibrated, good quality monitor for processing nor in evaluation.

I think the first place to search for a possible problem may just be the monotor you are using.

look at the image that you selected for submission (which should be below 150kb) and see if it shows the same "mess" as shown on DPC site?

Ah yes, it could be obvious too. Are you using the same computer/monitor to edit and view?

It doesn't.. that's my point.. I still have my submission open in PSP, and when comparing it side-by-side with the submission on the DPC site, the one on the site is the messy one.

I am using a good monitor.. and while it's a good thought, I don't think that can be my issue. I can look at both images on the same screen and there's a difference. :)

As for the tutorial, I'm using PSP Studio, so things are a little different than in PS, but I'm going to give it a go and see if I can't figure out what the problem is.

Thanks for the suggestions and help. :)

Some photo-editing programs will continue to show you the original image, eventho you have saved the image to a higher compression (messier). To confirm this, try closing your photo in PSP. Now open up the file that is going to be submitted to DPC (the >150kb file). I've never had any quality reduced by DPC so I'm pretty sure it has got to be your file being confused - the one before save for web, and the one after. Please let us know. thanks.

OK, at least we got one thing ruled out :)

Just be sure you're comparing jpg-to-jpg. In photoshop, when you save-for-web a .psd or .tif file it creates a jpg but does not display it after you save it; the displayed file continues to be the uncompressed file. If I want to double check the quality of my submission, I go the challenge folder and open up the jpg that PS created for me. I have never seen a variation in how THAT one looks displayed in PS or displayed in DPC.

Another thing to be careful of is that the created jpg has the sRGB color space assigned to it; if it is displayed on your computer in a larger color space, it WILL look different when displayed on the web.

Thanks, I'll give that a try on the next contest I enter and hopefully that'll help. I've just been saving everything as a .jpg, nothing special. Unfortunately, I know that doing it that way is making my recent submission score lower than it should be (imo, anyway).

I'm going to go get Photoshop today.. PSP is nice but the studio sucks.. it's a very streamlined version, and I miss all the bells 'n' whistles.
