ShutterPug, have you studied the roots of this song? This Heikki Lunta may have well been an actual person.
Heikki is a Finnish male first name. And 'lunta' is genitive form of Finnish 'lumi' i.e. snow (e.g. 'valkoinen lumi' -> 'white snow'; 'paljon lunta' ->'lots of snow')
And remember the prononciation: 'Hey-kee 'Loon-dah.
But then, perhaps it was 'Heitti lunta' ('he/she/it threw snow') instead?

Lot's of Finns lived in the area that Shutterpug is in. They were bigtime miners back in the day. Most of my wife's family hails from up that way.

You can read all about Heikki Lunta here: //www.pasty.com/heikki/heikkilunta.html

T'was a Yooper creation. :-)

I think I'm going to have to start doing the Heikki Lunta myself. We've had a crappy winter - no where near the snowfall we should have had. Once again - the weather guy has just predicted snow both west of me, and east of me. We sit smack dab in the middle and get nothing. :-(

We had about 6-8 inches in December which at Christmas melted and we are now experiencing what may be the second warmest January recorded in Indiana!!! We have horses and the mud is just too terrible!!! Yuk.

Ah, I do remember snow. Even here in Minnesota we have a lack of snow and are well on our way to set a record for the warmist Jan. ever. An average temp of almost 28 F. We should be in the single digets. I will have to dig some of my snow images out as well.

Snow? What's SNOW? Oklahoma City is STILL under a burn ban because we haven't had a drop of water in months. We're averaging temps in the mid 60s and the first week of January was over 80 degrees F. Will someone PLEASE bottle up some snow and send it our way? I'm in desparate need of something cold.....and beautiful.

LOL I am in Toronto, and when you said Peterborough ( a town also in ONtario) I was wondering where was all this snow you were talking about!!? Then I see you are talking about a whole different Peterborough!

Funny we in Canada get thought of as snow people, but all you "weird snow people' are in the States....Raining here tonight, 1 Degree Celsius or so...
And loving it !!!
