I came upon an overturned semi on the highway a few nights ago adn I was just wodnering if newspapers buy such photographs from amateurs such as myself, and if so, then how does one go about workout out a deal with it.

Well, if it was a couple of nights ago, you more than likely missed your chance.

But, to answer your question, yes they do. Your best bet is to contact the newspaper's photography editor or managing editor immediately after you took the photo and tell him the 5 W's of what you shot. Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. Or at least as many of those as you can get answers to.

yes, they would have probably bought it if it wasn't just another overturned semi...

if it spilled some stuff, or caught fire and so on...

it would GREATLY help if you got information -- like the area, the road name, what happened, the driver's name, the company he worked for, what that company does, time of the wreck, what company reported to the scene, what injuries happened, what caused the crash, and so on...

EDIT: too slow :(

I realized it was too late, I had just been thinking about the possibility, but thanks a lot I'll probably give my local paper a call tomorrow so I have their contact info for next time.

If I may make another suggestion...

f this is something you are seriously wanting to do, contact your local police department and request press creditentials. You can have press creditentials as a freelance photog.

They can be a life-saver in many ways.

Are there any special requirements to obtain presscredentials?

I just got an email back from my police department (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) and they told me that the only press passes they issue are for photographers who are in the department on a daily basis and it only applies to the press room in the department, not in the field.

I saw a post on DPC somewhere about our rights and it seems to me that you shouldn't have any problems taking pictures of anything you want in the field as long as you aren't impeding an investigation or getting in the way of the emergency officials. You can buy a police scanner on eBay for something like $70 and kind of do your own "ambulance chasing" though. Be careful though. I got a wild hair up my B**T the other day and decided to try to follow an ambulance. I was hoping for something good but lost the ambulance when they left the highway. Don't get into an accident trying to do something as stupid as I was doing. I stopped following once off the highway because of the high speeds involved.

Our local police department won't issue them unless you were sent there by the local newspaper to get them...
