I saw somebody somewhere worked out a rough list of stuff that was worth (subjective) shooting during the year in their specific location and I thought that was a good idea to get out of the hum drum. I know there are a few of us in this area and hopefully this might help some others...
In order to get my list going and to get stuff I would not think of;
What would you add to the list? If you can say roughly when it's on and point to a link or something that would be great but no need, just throw out some stuff.
Let me start with a few (Boston centric) ideas to show what I was meaning (when, what, where):-
Mid Feb - Chinese new year - China Town Boston.
July 4th-ish - Revolution Town Meeting reenactment - Boston.
July 4th-ish - Fireworks obviously - Lotsa places.
July 4-ish - Ironsides? turning (big old sail boat) - Charlestown.
July 4th-ish? - Musket demos - "Bunker Hill".
Summer - Outdoor Concerts - Copley Sq on Thur & Shell on some Fri.
Late Summer - Beaches - The Cape.
Late Summer - Rowing Regatta - Charles River.
Late Summer - Vintage race car rally - Western Mass somewhere.
Early Oct - Circus elephants thru streets - Charles/Mem Dr.
Fall - Yeah I know - Anywhere [Arcadia(sp?) has been on my list].
Yeah, I need to get more details but right now just an idea list if a starting point. I know there is an Airshow somewhere in summer also in western Mass. |

How can you live "in the Boston area" and NOT include "salt marshes" in your list? jejejeâ¢

Definitely Acadia, though I am not sure whether Fall is best. The Green Mountains of Vermont or various places in New Hampshire in fall would be superb.
My goal is to make it to a balloon festival one of these days in a fair weather season.
Though I am still wanting/waiting to make it out west to the Grand Canyon!

Fire is always a draw :) and it seems like there is a fair bit on first glance. Never heard of this, so Thanks.

I almost left off the fall thing because it's such a big area with a lot of places to see. I will certainly get somewhere in VT/NH for fall.
How is Acadia in the spring? I am out of here for a big chunk of summer, so won't have much time for multi-day things this year.
I used to live in a place that had a lot of balloons for a festival each year but was not so much into photos then - shame cause it was a really cool sight since this was NOT in the middle of nowhere!
Thanks for the suggestions so far - the more-r the better-er..... |

Spring in Acadia should fall around May - other than that and you'll just get tree buds instead of leaves. I'd wait until fall, unless you have a special affinity for blackflies. You'll want to watch specifically for tidal currents, as Thunder Hole can be quite magnificent at the right time of day, but much less interesting at others.
Waterfire is very neat, both to photograph and simply experience. Watch on the schedule for a night where they have the Sovereign Bank Ballroom open. That's when they shut down a couple of blocks to traffic and make a huge street dance. A local dance studio gives free dancing lessons (tango, swing, etc.) prior to nightfall, and then you have the rest of the night to "practice" all you've learned.
