I'm officially on a dpc break.
My round shot is probably, behind Matrix and 2 or 3 others, one of the best 5 shots I've ever created. It was exactly as I intended, the almost same shot gets sold quite frequently and it's just plain good. The fact that it's at less than 5.4 right now (my average) is so disturbing to me that I want to submit a picture of a brain next to the screenshot for DPC and call it "Contrast."
I had some good ideas for contrast, but...I really do think I need that break. It's ridiculous.
(In good news, I think I got a real, professional assignment from someone who's work depends on them making good photographic choices. According to DPC, they'd better look for another job)

All comments were not created equal.

..which is why you're entitled to ignore any comments you'd like to ignore, and since they aren't anonomous, you can check to see how valid you think the person's opinion is based on their past work/comments if you'd like. |
Exactly thank you Wingy... :-)

Make sure you have a label with big arrows pointing to the subjects.
You can call it "Your Brain on DPC" or "Just Say 9"

I tried that in the emotion challenge (and yes you did make a good pun there) DPhrustration, with mixed reviews. But, it works for you now Mav. Digital Phrustration Challenge!!

I gave the photo a 6.. Looking at your work I reckon you're a better photographer than me so please feel free to ignore these comments..
1. Never rely on a title to save a shot or point your viewer at what you intended the shot to be of. It should be obvious
2. If you were taking a shot of the boats maybe you should have
a) made them bigger they are currently, what, less than 5% of the image
b) used some compositional device to point our eye at their presence, maybe tried to get them in line with one of the big lights on the bank? Used rule of 3rds or some other standard photo compositional technique
c)not expected the viewer to hunt around for a black subject on a dark background when by contrast most of the frame is filled with a nicely exposed image of a good looking building..
In addition to this, please try not to be so arrogant towards people with less photographic technique / talent than you. Just because I couldn't paint a Picasso, Matisse, my own dining room, doesn't mean I can't appreciate when it is well done. The same is true of photography, I can't always get the shot that's in my mind but I can appreciate the work of others and as it's a free site I can and will vote as I see fit.
Photography to some extent is a language, if people are making adverse comments on your images you are failing to communicate with them. As you seem to think, this may make them idiots, but some of this may be your fault. If you want to improve your scores on this site you have to take the comments on board, good, bad, from idiots or professionals. If you are happy with your work and believe it cannot be improved upon why are you here? Maybe you do need a break?

Are we talking about a current challenge picture? if so, stop! I have not even looked at the thumbnails, and have no idea what is being hashed over, or how everyone knows who's is who's. I was commenting on frustration OVERALL and how it is always the same (and seems will never change). I guess...Just get used to it.

mav,
you're right...take a break and when you come back (and please do, I always look forward to your photos), remember that DPC is NOT the end all and be all of photographic evaluation. Do you sell prints? I know you do, so someone is made happy by what you do (if you need external feedback...I know I do). Do you like your photographs, did you find pleasure in creating them and sharing them? If so, to heck with the narrow judging that happens here.
I doubt I'll ever win a ribbon on this site. I refuse to take only the narrowest, most literal interpretation of a challenge and am therefore doomed to mediocrity here. I know my photographs are better than the average of my DPC scores might lead me to believe. Problem is I refused to take a picture of a ball for the Round challenge and I ask people to do things like look for a symmetry line that wasn't on the usual quadrants.
I've found that so long as I am pleased with the photographs I take and as long as my clients like the photographs they purchase, I'm happy.
Take the break, mav, you deserve it. Come back to us and bring your next great work.
Shari

OK I have just briefly gone over some on this post. (I don't have the time to read it all right now, cuz my computer is crazy). But I agree with you Mavrik. I feel as though people have just closed their eyes and aimed at any score for my round shot. I really don't think anyone has actually bothered to look at it. I put a lot of work into my setup, and might actually come last. What the fuck is with that? Well I might not be the best photographer on the site, but I am far above the scores I am getting for this challenge. |

At least it's not only me who finds the voters particularly harsh/ couldn't-see-a-good-thing-if-it-came-up-and-bit-them-don't-deserve-my-genius on this challenge... erm... anyway...

I recently took a break from a few challenges because I was becoming a bit frustrated. My scores just kept dropping and dropping. The images that are winning are really wonderful, and they inspire me, but as hard as I'd try, the worse I seemed to score. I felt a bit like a bottom feeder in a big lake...lol
It really did me some good to just step back and work on some pictures I'd been meaning to do. I'm so happy with the results of my projects, that even if I score low on dpc submissions, I still reaffirmed my ideas in my own eyes.
Try not to be personally insulted by the results or comments. Look for the input that may help you, and ignore those that don't apply. In other words, chew on the meat and spit out the bones.
I like winning ribbons, and I do locally, and on other sites. But this site has helped me grow, and through self examination, I've determined that the cross section here represents the general public, with all it's finicky tastes, indescretion, and rudeness. Sooooo I value the insight that this venue allows me to see.
Hope this makes sense and helps someone. :-)

This is the week to complain about getting comments? I thought that was last week... I think this thread should be locked and a "WHY ISN'T ANYONE COMMENTING ON MY ENTRY?" thread should be started...

I know I would never take any bad score personally. No one can judge another by a photo. We all have different taste. I find that with most photos you will get comments that say I live a cerain thing, and then others will say, I hate that same thing. However sometimes people probably do vote to quickly, without actually looking at the photo and studying it. |

loz, Yes, it really is a pity that some people don't take any time to study a picture. I think that applies to many aspects of life. Some never see the wonderful things in life because they don't take the time. Definetly a reflection of our hectic society. Anyway, I guess that if we want our pictures to be noticed we must "WOW" the masses with an image that grabs attention immediately. Gotta grab 'em with the first impression.
My primary goal, photographically speaking, is to do what I love, and hopefully some will appreciate my work. It really is a wonderful means of communication.
