How does this lens fare in portraiture? Outside and inside? I am wanting to do senior portraits and other portraits (families and such) and was curious on how this lens would fare in such work. |

I did my colors challenge with this lens..
as well as these
I love it. It does have its faults, plastic construction, has a problem going from AF to MF, have to be precise with your movement (could be mine) small focusing ring. Other than that, for the money, I dont think you can beat it. |

The seond most popular Canon lens here at DPC and is mostly used for portraits, at least in the higher scoring images throught the link above. It is a bit prone to flare, and is not robustly constructed, but those are the only flaws I can see. The color you can get from this lens is amazing. |

From my limited experience, you'll still need a decent light source. And I'd be wary of opening all the way to 1.8, since it makes the DOF so selective - if you're off just a little, part of the face can go out of focus. That said, it would be my choice for a cheaper portrait lens.

I know the largest aperature is f1.8 on this lens, but how small can it go?
Odds are I will eventually get this lens mostly because of its value for the price. I will probably end up with the Rebel XT here in the next month if things go correctly. |

You really can't go wrong with that lens, especially for the price. I love it, it rarely leaves my camera. It's the first lens I reach for when taking a portrait. It's also really good in low light situations.

Either 22 or 24, can't swear as to which. I'm at work or I would find out... |

I have been quite happy with the results on my 300D, although I was at first unsure if I would dig a fixed focal length lense. Somehow, I thought that would "limit" me. |

It's a fool-proof lens. Even a lame photographer like me got a ribbon with it the first time I used it.
