1827: The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad begins operations, becoming the first steam-operated railway in the United States to carry freight and passengers.

1932: The last Ford Model A rolls out of the factory. With a base price of $460, about 5 million Model A cars were manufactured between 1927 and 1932.

1983: M*A*S*H airs its final episode. More than three-quarters of TV viewers at the time were tuning in to see Hawkeye say goodbye.

1937: Connecticut issues the first automobile license plates that are used to identify registered vehicles.

1961: The Peace Corps is created by President Kennedy. The program, which Congress funded with $40 million, sent 1,000 American volunteers to the West Indies and Africa in its first year of operation.

2005: Steve Fosset lands The GlobalFlyer at Salina Municipal Airport in Kansas, completing the first solo, non-stop flight around the world. At 67 hours, it's also the fastest flight around the world without refueling.

1937: Cook County Hospital in Chicago establishes the first modern blood bank. Blood transfusions were first used during WWI, but techniques to prevent blood from coagulating took until now to perfect.

1972: The Godfather premiers in theatres, and Francis Ford Coppola's film would later sweep the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor for Marlon Brando, and Best Screenplay.

1802: West Point in New York State becomes the first military school in the United States.

1819: Dr. John Bostock shares the first clinical description of hay fever during a meeting of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society in London. Bostock describes symptoms including runny nose, sneezing, and irritated throat, which he attributed to the pollens of grasses, weeds, and trees.

1926: Robert Hutching Goddard, a physicist from Auburn, Massachusetts, launches the first rocket propelled by liquid fuel, a mixture of oxygen and gasoline. The rocket flew to a height of 184 feet.

1926: FIRST LIQUID-FUELED ROCKET:

The first man to give hope to dreams of space travel is American Robert H. Goddard, who successfully launches the world's first liquid-fueled rocket at Auburn, Massachusetts, on March 16, 1926. The rocket traveled for 2.5 seconds at a speed of about 60 mph, reaching an altitude of 41 feet and landing 184 feet away.

1963: Alcatraz Prison, also known as "The Rock," closes its doors as a prison. At its peak of use, more than 200 inmates were confined in this maximum-security facility in San Francisco Bay.

1965: About 3,200 demonstrators march with Martin Luther King Jr. during the "Alabama Freedom March" from Selma, Alabama, to the state capitol in Montgomery.

1974: Congress passes the Equal Rights Amendment. Originally proposed in 1923, the Amendment prohibits gender discrimination.

1912, First Lady Helen Herron Taft and the Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, planted two Yoshino cherry trees on the northern bank of the Potomac River Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. The event celebrated the Japanese government's gift of 3,020 trees to the United States.

1958, Soviet First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev replaces Nicolay Bulganin as Soviet premier, becoming the first leader since Joseph Stalin to simultaneously hold the USSR's two top offices.

1979,Radioactive steam was leaked into the atmosphere at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania prompting fears for the safety of the plant's 500 workers.
