709 BC: The first record of a total solar eclipse is written in China in the publication Chun-chiu, book I. The recorded date, when reduced to the Julian calendar, agrees exactly with that of a computed solar eclipse.

1913: Splat! Moviegoers see the first pie-in-the-face shot in the silent film A Noise from the Deep when Mabel Normand delivers the dessert to Fatty Arbuckles kisser.

1975: The US Apollo 18 and the Soviet Soyuz 19 spacecraft dock in space, marking the first out-of-this-world meeting of the world superpowers. Commanders Thomas P. Safford and Aleksei Leonov shook hands and exchanged gifts after the hatch was opened between the two vessels.

1880: Books are loaned for the first time to the general public by the Public Library of San Francisco.

1961: Passengers aboard a TWA passenger jet become the first to view a movie while in flight.

1984: Lynn Ripplemeyer becomes the first woman to pilot a commercial airliner across the Atlantic.

1984: Geraldine Ferraro becomes the first woman to be nominated to run for vice president of the United States.

1858: Fans are charged a fee (of 50 cents) for the first time to see a professional baseball game but get their money's worth as the New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 22 to 18.
