Nothing -- feel free to set up a democratically-operated photography site. It should cost you less than $500/year to carry out such a sociological experiment. Be sure to report back to us on the result.
In the meantime, that's not how this site is run. Do you think Wal-Mart would make its owners billions of dollars per year if the workers got to vote on their own salaries and work rules, or if the customers got to vote on setting the prices?
This site is a business, not a true membership organization. You are a customer/participant, not a shareholder or part-owner or employee. |
If this is a business sight and it is fine whit me, but I have to say your word writing and attitude is not business wise I have to say there most be a better way to say what you was writing :(

Me, too. Here's some recent examples:

YEAH!!!! Because I was seriously thinking that they DQ'd DrJOnes because they didn't want to give the ribbon to a Nikon owner...what a joke.

Unless, of course, you renewed your membership right before you were appointed. ;-) |

Don't make it sound like drew or langdon are forking out their hard-earned money to keep this community afloat. I'm sure they are making a substantial part of their income from both here at DPC as well as from the profits of DPC Prints. |
Since they both have to hold down substantial "day jobs" -- which notably causes substantial delay in some DPC-updates -- I dobt they are "raking in the big bucks." However, that's none of our business.
What might be more important to note is that all of the features (and more) which were provided from the site's inception are still available completely free to anyone with a vlaid email address and willingness to abide by the rules. I fail to see how they are "exploiting" anyone under those circumstances.
If you don't think the additional features are worth $25/year, then don't pay and participate anyway, but don't act like it's anything other than a bargain. Criminey, for that they give you a storefront from which to conduct your own, profit-making enterprise -- try and get that for $25/year anywhere else on the net.
What's your gripe, anyway? |

Umm Dave?
I seem to recall when you got mighty pissed off with me for wanting to give my free membership to someone based on age stating that was unfair discrimination. So it is okay for discrimination when you are making the rules but not for anyone else? |

Yes yes, the site just sprang out of the ether fully formed, and has been a veritable firehose of cash ever since the very first member joined. It obviously had nothing to do with years of hard work, smart promotion, and personal investment.

No way, this is fun. I'm not violating any rules (although that hasn't stopped me from being banned in the past). I even have the email saved if you want to see it where I didn't violate any rules, 'but came close' -- which apparently merits a ban.

dp -- if you're so unhappy, why are you still here? i've just gotta ask because you seem to spend an awful lot of time here for someone who thinks it's such a poor "sight." |

I never said it was a poor site. I just think people complain a lot and something should be done about it. Heck, maybe this thread will allow people to just get it all out of their system and they'll be done with it.

I think its great what the site council does - for no pay. So thanks.
They do have to make hard decisions in some challenges and just like referees and umpires, they are human and will make some mistakes
Perhaps the concept of some sort of term limits would be good. Fresh blood is usually a good thing.
My only gripe in general is the thought police which has already reared its ugly head in this thread (yes I know this is not in rant). I for one would have liked to have read what was deleted and draw my own opinions and conclusions. |

Legal adults, they always think they're better than us. I've seen 50 year old behave as if they were 15, rude and inconsiderate. Then again, we don't normally make our own money, so I guess adults wear the pants.
Some young people though, I feel, deserves to be an SC even if underage. Afterall, you might as well keep them out of drugs and all, place them on the computer and be for the community. Think about it, most adults have to go to work. So get young people or retired people this kind of stuff, they usually got all the free time in the world. |

I got home from vacation only to start the new year by having my laptop and camera stolen. I will be in a grumpy mood for several days, anyway, and seeing a thread titled "Down with SC" does little to settle my nerves. I humbly suggest that insulting the volunteers who run this site should then be no more appropriate than my sarcastically/bluntly-phrased but 100% accurate statements -- so please get on the case of the OP instead. |

Ah, it all makes sense now. A council that includes 5 Nikon D70 owners DQ'd a photo purely for the sake of preventing a Nikon ribbon. Whoopsie... looks like Grigrigirl slipped past our watchful eyes and took the yellow anyway. |
