Does anyone know what kind of bird this is? I thought it was a pelican, but it looks a bit colorful to be one?
It's a bit far away, and I wish it came closer, but maybe someone can make it out and say.

The longish beak makes me think some kind of herron but I'm far from a orni-whatsis.

Nope, don't think so. I have pictures of herons, and they don't look like this. Herons have long legs and long necks which compensates for the long sharp beaks. This has short legs and short neck. Hmmm. It's a wonder.

I'mno bird expert, but it sure has that pelican kinda look to it. The bill and the way it's holding it's head in flight make me think this is in fact a pelican.

Search on pelican at google images. Check a couple of pages, and I think you'll find some support for your identification. |

I'm no bird expert, but it looks like a brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) (click on link and search "Brown Pelican" - 2nd result). This looks like a great source for bird identificaton (goin' in my favs)

The name "Brown Pelican" is sort of deceptive. The adults have really nice coloring. Here's one of mine.

That is correct. The juvenile Brown Pelicans are brown and white but as they mature they also will start to show some yellow around the head.
The one greatandsmall posted looks to be an adult, here is a pic of a juvenile:

Yeah, mine does look like a brown pelican alright. COOL! Nice big bird too. I am going on another excursion soon. Hope to get more of these!

Awesome shot Katerine!
I've got a juvenile too. But the lighting and my skills aren't nearly as good as yours.
Good luck with more pelicans, Rose. They can be skittish, but are pretty tame anywhere that people fish a lot. The ones on docks and piers will sometimes come right up to you. |

I don't have a pic of one, but yes I have. It is so bizarre the first time you see it. You have no idea what they are doing!
Roxanne - thanks for the compliment. Pelicans are one of my favorite birds although I do not have a lot of good pics of them. I usually end up with more photos of egrets and herons.
