Hi all,
I want to buy a tripod, but have no clue about what to look for. I want to use it for night photography, and preferably it should be light weight. Manfrotto, Gitzo, Velbon... what is a good choice? And what about tripod heads? Second hand I can buy a Gitzo Reporter, a Velbon D600/D500, a Manfrotto 747 (or T47, from the picture it is not clear).
Thanks,

I'm afraid this doesn't answer your question... but untill someone does:
I've got a cheep dime-store one, but this pre-sunrise morning, I used a ladder with a sandbag on top. I was very pleased with the stability and the results. Just an idea to tide you over. I'll be watching this thread since I'm also in the market. |

I usually use my Sunpak 7500, it extends to 74" which I really like, Its a great unit and is pretty light. Its a great "pro-sumer" unit, it has the level on the quick realise, and also a ball level on the tripod itself. I love doing night photography with long exposure times. Another feature I really like for slippery terrain like ice, I can spin up the rubber feet so I have a sharp spike that will grip on ice. That really helped with this picture that was a 50 second exposure:

I've got a cheap hama tripod, but its not until it lets you down that you curse yourself for being thrifty.
I am looking at BENBO tripods, the Trekker Mk2 in particular. They seems really versatile, I love the way the centre pivots. But I havent heard an alwful lot about them, they are pretty reasonable on ebay mind you.
Happy hunting dood
