I know that's true for a lot of rural folks!

As a voter, using my vote, to vote my opinion, should I care about what the challenge means to somone else?

I don't think so.

:-P

I know exactly what you feel; I think we all have been there.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding but these lines make it sound like you don't care if and entry does not meet the challenge. If it doesn't matter if an entry meet the challenge then we are just left with Free Study.
I'm not trying to single you out, a lot of people have this attitude, just trying to clarify.

I am a big stickler for meeting the Challenge and I just counted what I believe to be 8 weak entries including a few DNMC's, in my opinion, on the first page alone. That's just my opinion, of course.

I just don't like getting or giving those DNMC comments though occasionally, rarely I do hand out similar staements in the form of a question to the photographer. Seems more diplomatic.

I myself have recieved two loosely stated DNMC's ("...but not city life") and another that I can't quote. I've also recieved 5 comments saying "perfect for the Challenge" of the 14 comments I have....so that's what I meant by "I don't give a damn". I don't care because I happen to think...know they are wrong. I thought it was funny that I got two of those comments myself...which I never get and even funnier that I think there are so many weak or DNMC's in the Challenge itself. Normally I would be stunned but by the look of the entries in this one...it somehow makes sense that this would occur.

In general, I think this Challenge is a mess and that's not a complaint btw...I'm shrugging it off but I thought it would be so easy and so straightforward...that's what's confusing.

My vote is never wrong. My vote reflects my opinion. My opinion may be different, but it's mine. Hence, my vote is never wrong.

Out of the box interpretations of the challenge theme, like yours (bear in mind I can see which photo is yours) will inevitably draw some number of DNMC comments. It's the way it is. When you have 300+ different folks voting, you will have 300 different opinions of what meets the challenge, some very narrow, some very broad and many in between.
Take it as an indicator, if you get a LOT of these, that you MIGHT have done a better job of linking to the challenge theme. I've been guilty of this in the past, and have always had a forehead-slapping "DOH!" moment as a result.
Don't obsess about comments, take them for what they are worth, and try to disconnect your emotional attachment to your shot and really hear what the commentors are saying. You really do learn more from mistakes than from successes.

Oh, she had to pull out the pastry chef hat and torment us with yummy desserts. Can I have both even though I only asked for the white chocolate truffle cake.

I think I'll like the other one, but I'm only giving you a 3 for it. ;)

Regarding suburban and rural photos in this challenge. There is no requirement that one enters a challenge, so if you are not near a city, just enter the Shapes challenge.

hannafate. You are quite upset about the fact that you received DNMC comments and in fact called people 'snobs' due to their opinions of your photo. However, I notice that you yourself like to leave such 'dnmc' comments. One (and I quote) even says "Lame interpretation of the challenge". Obviously different people think different ways. That's just fine. You left a comment on a photo of a lake in the collections challenge that stated that it did not meet the challenge. Maybe, just maybe, this is part of their photo collection, or maybe they collect palm tree leaves, or coconuts, or maybe they are a scientist and collect water samples. Fact is, you don't know.
Fact is, what seems like city life to YOU just might not seem like city life to ME. For you to jump in here and call people snobs for leaving DNMC comments, when you yourself leave them, is not right in my opinion.

On a side note...did you all see Setzler's "Hypocrite" thread? Some good readin there.

That fish head might even ribbon in City Life, if only it were sitting on top of a pile of carpet samples...on a country road.

Hey just be thankful your shapes entry didn't get a comment saying it would fit better in city life, even though it has nothing to do with a city and has no visible life in it...

Agree with Kirbic. Unfortunately it is easy for me to get emotionally involved in my photo because its mine!! gosh darn it! But, where else can you get 300+ people to look at your photo, let alone vote, or maybe, just maybe leave a comment. So... Comments = good! (all types included)

We don't all live in New York City, and for some of us, city life is a lot different. I have collected a whole slew of nearly identical comments from "Hidden during voting", all saying, "I don't see the 'life'".
Well, maybe for some people city life is effing DEPRESSING, and we are trying to show that.

Comments on the quality of the photo would be helpful. Not comments on my interpretation of the challenge.

You will need to understand, and learn from, the comments on your interpretation as well as those on the quality of your photo in order to improve your challenge scores.

In the Oops! challenge Sanjin threw in this stunning shot
A shot that would have been at or near the top of any free study challenge. It might charitably have been said to have some nodding relation with the challenge.....maybe. It ended up at 6.137. I would extrapolate form this that missing the challenge will cost you about a point and a half to three points.

If most of the people think you missed the challenge, then you did. It happens to me all the time, I either miss the challenge or submit a trite "well that is such an obvious answer to the challenge" boring shot. It doen't make it a bad shot, I just guessed wrong about what people would like.
