have a Nikon d70. would like to try doing more portrait type stuff. What would be a good fairly inexpensive lens. I was looking at the nikon 50mm 1.8, it's less than 100. |

You already have that range covered, of course, in the lenses you own. What, precisely, are you seeking to gain here?

It's a very good lens from all reviews I've read. The top three entries in the Phobia challenge are all portrait headshots taken with a 50mm f1.8. It is one of the most widely used portrait (and general purpose) lens of the market.
A quick perusal of the top photos with the Nikkor 50mm f1.8D shows its versatility. (link)

The 50 f/1.8 is pretty good as a Portrait lens, plus you can't beat the price. If you want a headshot lens then I'd go for a 100mm f/2.8 Macro...which of course can also be used as a 1:1 Macro lens...
Some people love the 85 f/1.8 too...

if Nikon has an equivalent to the 85 1.8 from canon, get that instead. 85 seems to work better for us as a portrait length (even a little bit short) and 50mm is too short.
