Just curious...

How will you score the "Best of 2005" challenge if there are many really good shots? (more than usual)

Will you simply give out more high scores (which is probably how my votes will go), or is it going to be voted so that you acheive a more even distribution of the score?

For instance, if a very good shot would normally get a 7 or 8 vote in a typical challenge for you, but probably pales a bit in comparison to the upper end of this challenge - will it still be a 7 or 8 or will the compeition cause the score to drop closer to 5 or 6?

I hope I'm explaining this clearly. I'm just really curious.

I'll score the same way I usually do. If there are lots of really good photos, I'll give lots of high scores. :)

i'll give out high scores for the ones I really think deserve it.

if I find myself giving out all 10's, then.. i might have to reconsider :-)

I will give the ones I like high marks and the ones I don't like will get low marks...

Every time I vote,I try my best to rate each image on its own merit without purposefully comparing it to the others in the challenge. I'll do that with the "Best of" as well. I have no problems giving out lots of high scores. :)

As usual, I'll go for technical merit and composition. After that comes visual appeal and/or impact. a/k/a the "Wow Factor".
P.S. I don't particularly have to like it to give it a high score.

I think that I will end up giving higher scores. I like to think that the 1-10 scoring scale applies to all photgraphs I have seen, and that the very best get 10s.

It makes little difference how you score, as long as you're consistent. I expect to hand out lots of highs though.

Ditto!

For those of you who might be curious, I don´t really have a system, except I rarely give a lower score of 4 if the shot meets the challenge and rarely a higher score than 5 if I think a shot doesn´t meet the challenge and since I give shots the benefit of the doubt most of the time with meeting challenges I really just go with my gut feeling. That pretty much means that I give out higher scores to free studies since there is no photo that won´t meet the challenge.

This is also how I usually vote. I think particularly in this challenge there will be so many different types of photos that to try and compare one to another doesn't work too well for me.

That is exactly why I am having a problem choosing the photo to enter. I like them both probably equally, but for different reasons. Two entirely different kinds of shots. :)

I don't vote on a curve. I vote each photo individually on it's own merits. For the username challenge I think I had 2 screens of photos that I voted 7 or above. I think that's just an indication of a lot of great entries. :)

As usual, I will rate each photo individually on it's own merits on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being a blank frame or something so small it's indistinguishable, 10 being a perfect photo). In doing so I consider both technical, creative and presentation (bad borders are a huge pet peeve) aspects. Usually, I then adjust accordingly for how well the photo meets the challenge, but that's not necessary for this. I suppose if you were psychic maybe you could assess if it's truly the person's best photo, but I'm going to have to give them the benefit of the doubt. :-P

my way of scoring this challenge is a unique one

1= bad photo in all ways
2-4= some part(s) of the photo are bad
5= the photo is ok but not interesting
6-9= the photo is very good but not perfect
10= WOW

My question who is submitting a previously uploaded to dpc photo from their porfolio, or will this be a new, non-viewed or previously uploaded photo?

Previously viewed for mine. I don't know if folks will make the connection or not.

I tend to have the same amount of 10's and 9's in a challenge no matter the quality (unless the quality is very poor). 1:100 for a 10 and about double the number of 9's. 8, 7, and 6, however, are open and that number goes up and down based on the quality of the challenge...

As far as Kelly's question. I'm down to 4 selections. 3 have never been seen and 1 has, but a while ago. I hid it on my portfolio already in case I use it.

That about covers it.

Doesn't matter as long as it wasn't in a previous challenge -- and if it was, request a DQ and vote as if it wasn't.

High scores to those that i like, low scores to those that I don't. The only exceptions being those pictures to which I think I can attribute to particular photographers with whom I am trying to ingratiate myself. In these cases I will write sickeningly flattering comments but score really low.....

I plan to reverse my scale for this one. Great shots get 1's and crappy shots get 10's. It'll be the great equalizer.

Ha! Had you going there, didn't I? I'll just score the same as ever. Everything gets scored between 3 and 7 on the first pass, then I go through again and adjust scores as I see fit.

Last year I did this:

This was the original in my portfolio:

And for the challenge I re-edited to this:

This year I'll use an image that was previously in my porfolio, commented on and viewed by many people. But I am using a different crop and slightly different coloring.

Once in a year you shouldn't bother about anonimity (did I spell that right?), especially not if you are looking at what YOU think is YOUR best of 2005. The best is the best, use it. Someone who votes you down for it is very narrowminded.

Bruce and I will be voting as usual for the most part, although for this particular challenge, to get a 9 or 10 there MUST be something plaid in the shot or have exactly 14 people in it, no more, NO less.
...oh, and a garanteed 10 for any flying monkeys in tuxedos.

My prediction for the blue: a shot of 14 scottish kilt wearin' poet warriors riding plaid tuxedo clad flying monkeys into battle!!!

I'll score according to merit, I would find it quite sad that a "7" in once challenge isn't a "7" in another.

I am, however, quite stingy on tens but I'm hoping on giving out quite a few :)

As to entry: Probably something out to the portfolio, but all contenders have been hidden and don't have huge numbers of view.

That is, if I enter. I should. I probably will. We'll see. I dunno.
