Just get involved with the DPC community. Get to know some of the people here...as the majority of them are really really nice and great people, as well as fantastic photographers.
Make sure you enter challenges too...as that is what this site is about for the most part. It's a lot of fun...and it helps to improve your photography skills at the same time.

My tips are to check out the learning section which has some neat tutorials and to make sure you read the rules before you submit. The forums are full of information too and there's always someone around who's willing to help. Welcome to DPC! |

STAY OFF THE FORUMS...
for your own sanity.
Don't say I didn't warn you. ;) |

Thanks jen, with all the whining in the forums lately, it's nice to hear something positive.
My biggest advice? Grow a thick skin if you're going to be submitting, some people are short and to the point, and if taken the wrong way, could seem harsh. If you get such a comment, step back and say 'how can I use this comment to make my next photo better'.
For example, a comment that says "EEEEEEWWWWW!!!!!" First look, it appears kind of mean, but step back...translate it into "The subject matter does not appeal to me".
Welcome to DPC!

Welcome! I must say that this site has been a Godsend for me - I've learned an enormous amount over the last 9 months (a TON!). By far the best $25 I've ever spent! LOL
Advice...
First, take comments with a grain of salt - everyone is entitled to their opinion and not everyone is going to like your shot or be kind about saying so, so just accept that fact now and don't let it bother you.
Second, comment on other people's photography. You may not think you're "qualified" to critique some of the photogs work on this site, but guess what, you're entitled to your opinion too - and we're here because we WANT to know what other people think. Also, the more you give feedback on images, the better your own shots get. Sounds backward, but it's the truth.
Third, shoot for yourself and please yourself first. That way, if other people are less than kind in their voting or comments, you are less likely to take it personally, because after all - you're happy with it and that's the opinion that really matters!
Lastly, don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions. This is a pretty open and friendly bunch of people. I've made some good friends already - much to my surprise. You'll find that you get to know people quickly if you spend much time on here, and if you're just getting started I highly recommend spending LOTS of time here!
Have fun & welcome again!

Here's my tip...
drink alot of whiskey, learn to ignore, don't take in stray dogs, don't live in LA, invest your money wisely, buy American unless it's your camera then buy Canon, know that Icelandeians are always going to score high, know that water drops are always going to score high, and most of all the most important tip is this....
tip your waiter or waitress when eating out.

Thanks for all the info. This site offers so much. I think I will spend some time getting to know how everything works. Hopefully soon I will get up the nerve to attempt a challenge. Can't wait to dive in. Oh, I started digital with a nikon. Just change over to the rebel. Have to say it's been a great camera. But, still have alot. to learn about it too. Thank you for all the wonderful tips. Can't wait to see more. |
