I got the Manfrotto 3021pro for Christmas and its just too heavy for me. I want something that is going to be light and portable. Does any one have any suggestions for me?
Thanks. |

I'll trade you my promaster 30 dollar tripod for your manfrotto :-)
(Yes I'm serious, and yes I know you shouldn't accept this offer) |

Its so heavy. I dont see myself using it just because I would have to lug it around. What about the 190pro? I was thinking about getting that instead. |

I use the BPRO version of the same tripod and i wouldn't trade it for anything. It's a great tripod. If you downgrade you are going to probably lose the horizontal center post capability. You got a great tripod.

Yeah. I love the center post. But the 190 is a tad bit smaller. 2 pounds lighter and still has the post. Still a no? |

Get used to the weight, or reconcile yourself to dropping serious coin moving up to the equivalent tripod in carbon fiber, which will be just as stiff and quite a bit lighter. You don't want the shorter tripod unless you happen to be very short yourself, because to use it comfortably you will have to extend the center column and this will introduce vibration into the equation in a serious way, especially in a strong breeze. You will soon realize this and start to shoot stooped over, and it will not be comfortable, and you will stop using your tripod except in studio-type shots and there will be little point in the entire exercise.
So get used to it. At least in my experience every serious photographer is reconciled to hauling serious gear around. You should have seen the Sinar 4x5/Majestic tripod combo I lugged around on my shoulder shooting landscapes; camera and tripod alone were over 30 lbs... And remember; whatever does not kill you, makes you stronger :-)

2 lbs (pounds) is about 1 Kg. The 3021 weighs about 7 lbs so that would be about 25% lighter (roughly).

Bear-Music brings up very valid points. I too tried a 3021 and fond it to be beastly heavy. I now have a tripod that is 7.5# plus the head, and while kinda heavy, the solidity of it makes up for that weight.
Also consder what you have for equipment, weight wise. The heavier the cam/lens the more top heavy the assumbly becomes, so the easier to knock it over, the less stable, the more issues you will have with it.
My tripod came wiht a carry bag with a shoulder strap so that makes it much easier to lug around.

I've heard it said "strong, light weight, low cost -- pick any two." Since you need strong (otherwise, there is no point) and want light weight, it will cost you.
I've got a Gitzo 1227 with a Kirk BH-3 head. The combo is under 5 pounds, it's real sturdy, but cost about $700, which was difficult to swallow, but it works well as opposed to my previous low cost, light weight tripods. |
