What are the odds of buying a defective...or at least sub-par Canon L lens? I am in the market for two lenses right now...a 24-70 2.8L and a 70-200 2.8L. I've heard great things about the 70-200...but I've heard mixed reviews about the 24-70. On Fred Miranda, it only has an 85% "recommend" rating...as opposed to the 95+% recommendation rating for most of the other L lenses...including the 70-200. So, what ARE the odds of getting a "dud?" Or is it a worry that I shouldn't have?

I think the odds are low its very often that people get a lens thats not working properly, as far as the ratings being low for the 24-70, hmm, thats an amazing lens, just look at some of the shots that have been taken with that lens under equipmen. and see for yourself. |

I guess people are more vocal about their problems versus their successes.

One way to get around buying a defective lens, or at least to make it easier, is to buy locally in person. I bought my 100-400L that way. Was able to test it in the store and got the assurance of the sales rep that I could return it no problem. Returning items purchased on the internet is a pain and you have no chance to test it first. If I'm going to spend $1000+ plus for something, I want to make sure its really what I want and that it works the way it should. The extra $100 was worth the peace of mind. |

Very true. I'll look into that.

I bought the following this past year:
Canon 20D (defective, had to send to factory for repairs)
70-200mm f/2.8 IS (defective, had to send to factory for repairs)
Tokina 12-24mm (defective, focus was off, B&H swapped me another)
Hitachi 4gig Microdrive (defective, shipped replacement)
So...what are the odds. It all depends. Though I've had no problems with my 50mm f/1.8 II. But I've always had some weird negative lot in life where I seem to attract the defective units. (Maybe I just buy more stuff than most people...who knows.) |

I wonder how many people on DP have had problems with L lenses?

At another forum there are lots of 2nd hand Canon lenses for sale with added text "sharp copy".
Certainly makes you wonder how good Canon QC really is.
bazz.

this may be a bit off topic, but has anyone experienced the Canon 24-70 2.8L compared to the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR...Is it worth an extra $1000 for the difference in quality? |

maby not in image quality, but it sure is in build quality, the Canon 24-70 L has weather sealing, it's hevy and just by holding it you feel it's well built and can take some banging without geting hurt.
that is why you see all pros that uses Canon body with L lenses, they don't have time to pamper the equipment so it has to withstand being thrown in the bag or rolling on the ground in the dirt ;)
wonder what that would do to the Tamron lens ????

How do you know if you have a sharp copy????? I guess a lot of testing? What do you compare it to (there needs to be some kind of benchmark)?
