I'm in the market for a couple good lenses. I have around $2000-2500 to spend. For sure, I am going to buy the Canon 70-200 f2.8 (I've decided I don't really need the IS). I would like to get one more lens that would serve as a good multi-function portrait and all-purpose lens...maybe something in 24-70 range? Any ways, I've considered buying the Canon 27-70 f2.8...but it's so expensive. I've heard good things about the Tamron equivalent...but I worry about build quality. I'm am currently setting up a home studio but I have limited space. would a 16 (or 17)-35mm lens be too wide for portraits? If so, how would the portraits be affected? Any suggestions about a good lighting setup would also be much appreciated. Thanks!

16-35 will make distorted portraits. The Tamron 28-75 is fantastic but you only want to do ports in the 55-75 range of it.

My favorite portrait lens is the 85mm f1.8, but that won't eat much of your budget. You might get a 50mm lens as well. I'll suggest the f1.4 simply because of USM and the smoother bokeh.

Why don't you pick up a 35mm prime that will turn out to be a 50mm once you get past the enlargment. Or I would suggest a 50mm prime. (but my personal favorite of the lens I own is my 85mm prime I always get great portiats with it. And if your just doing plain portiats 3 point lighting is pretty much the only way to go. Girls boost up the back llight a little more. But experament people look so different in different light, and don't be affraid to use some hard light.

The 70-200 does great portraits too.

Tamron SP 24-135 3.5-5.6
Fantastic lens. You won't be shooting in the dark so super fast is not needed. You can get teh BG nicely out of focus with this lens at f7 to f9, and the range is great - full body or tight on part of the head, you got it all. Great build, and focuses to like 16" (they term it a macro lens) and that is handy.

The 70-200 2.8 is a great lens, but won't do much more than head or bust shots in a studio. The 50 1.8 or 1.4 is nice, but how will you look and feel zoooming with your feet? Great for a hobby perhaps, but not very professional, especially if you are moving the tripod and all to reframe!

You can see samples in my DPC portfolio under teh Misc and Seniors areas.

Canon 70-200 f2.8L = $1140 double rebate - $80
Canon 24-70 f2.8L = $1150 double rebate - $90
$2290 - $170
total for both lens $2120 coming in a little under budget of $2000-$2500

2 excellent lenses.

This definitely depends - I know most of the 'greats' I've seen educational videos and such for and seen work use a rolling tripod stand. They can just move it, up, down, and roll it around to compose their shots. It's a studio tripod - very professional. :)

(That being said, I know that some of the best maternity and children's photographers also use foot zoom and the 85 1.8 - like Marion Silber and the Killians)

go for a prime. No doubt about it. If you want a lens just for portraits where you are in control of the setup/situation, a prime is far superior. 85mm prime is best. Also remember in the future you may end up full frame (the way things seem to be going) so a 50mm or less wont be suitable.Even the canon 100 2.8 macro would be great plus you get a proper macro lens too. IMHO
