But for now, my badboy of the P&S world keeps me digitally happy. 8 Megapixels :-P LMAO

8mp on a 8.80 x 6.60mm sensor is pretty super dense :-P

Thats good reason for dSLR right there, sensor size, heck mines pushing 18mm x 13.5mm with 8 MP any smaller, I would get more noise at low light conditions I like to shot. Heck now even low light on anything over ISO400 gives some noise.

I already said that in another thread recently, but I actually enjoy using both dSLR and (a good) P&S. I used to have a Canon G6, and once you get a handle of its idiosyncrasies, you can make pretty decent photos most of the time (well, some photos you just wouldn't attempt with a P&S, I guess). What is important, you can do things which are hard with SLR, like taking candid shots right in front of your subject, taking shots very close to the ground without actually laying down on it or high above your heads, putting the camera in a small bag and taking it along on a downhill ski or a bicycle ride. I do love my Nikon d70, and I use it most of the time, but I was missing all these possibilities of a P&S, so when I discovered Canon S2 IS, I jumped on it (thanks to louddog for advice!) and has not regretted it. All manual controls, 300m zoom + image stabilization in a small body = lots of fun!

Shutter lag is getting to be more of a matter of how new your camera is rather than P&S vs. SLR. New P&S cameras have less lag than the first digital Rebel.

I have a dSLR and two P&S cameras. Most of the time I'd prefer to have the SLR, but there are some cases where the P&S is just flat out better:

The LCD screen removes the need to put your eye, camera, and subject all in a line. Flip and twist is better yet. This is convenient for shooting from near the ground or above a crowd, and invaluable for things like rock climbing where you can hold the camera out at the end of your arm to get the angle you want.

The smaller sensor of the P&S gives you deeper depth of field.

Some people are just intimidated by a large camera or lens. It's more likely people will stop acting candid when you point a big ol honkin lens at them to get your candid shot, but for some reason a little silver camera doesn't seem to faze them as much, even if they see you shooting.

And of course, a dSLR won't fit in your pocket.

D2H - 8 fps - 4.1MP/ great for sports/action not bad for A4 prints either
Contax 4UR - 3fps continuous shooting untill the card is full - 4MP not bad prints at A4 either, size of a credit card, little shutter lag but not a lot.

I understand the thread starter was only refering to those nasty disposable type P&S older things, I have a very old Nikon Coolpix 900 at 1.3MP and a shutter lag of 15 minutes to produce an image that would look bad printed on a credit card, but I still use them all at sometime. I think I will butcher the Nikon 900 to make a IR cam just for the fun of it.

The D200 looks like a great camera but I think I would prefer the D2H just for the speed issue unless god would ever bless me with a D2X then Ide gladly sell/swap it over... all offers considered *WINK*

Bottom line - A P&S is what it is, its a small size pocket camera for snaps not professional at all nor will they ever be, but they do take good clear shots for what they are. I had the Sony F828 and it was amazing as is my tiny Contax but I would never turn up for a shoot with either.. I just got the D50 and although that too is not recognised as a PRO machine it is one hell of a nice camera that I now use more than the D2H (I no longer shoot sports for a job, I do nature now)....my 2c
