Are Tiffen filters any good? I need to get a 77mm UV filter and also a 77mm polarizing filter. I've heard circular polarizing filters are the way to go...can anybody back that up? Does using a UV filter cut down overall image quality? Any info on filters would be good. Thanks a lot.

I have Tiffen filters on all of my lenses. The C-PL is a great filter also neutral density filters are a must. They will let you get longer shutter speeds in bright conditions helps with water for sure. The only other filters that I would recommend is the Cokin filter holder and the Graduated ND filters that will help in leveling out the sky and the ground. Hope that helps.

Tiffen's a decent manufacturer at a fair price point IMO.

Look for glass filters that are multi-coated. I haven't bought a tiffen filter in a long time, but I think they make these. I have been using hoya filters and i'm quite happy with those.

I bought those as a set and am very pleased with them.

You need to use a Circular Polarizer if you want your auto focus to work.

As to the other filter, why? Use a lens hood and common sense. If you have to go to a beach or other harsh locale, then it may be a good idea. At least you are looking at good filters, but it will degrade teh image somewhat - whether that is noteiceable in teh real world who can say. On a very wide angle you may cause vignetting.

I have both a 52mm and 55mm Tiffen circular polarizer and they work very well.
