MySpace and sites like it (Friendster, FaceBook, etc) are intended to be social networking services. The basic premise is that you create a profile and select what type of people you'd like to meet (friends, dating, etc.) Initially, you could recommend your friends to other friends so that, in some obscure way, you were always contacting a friend of a friend of a friend. Now it's sort of become a free-for-all. Most of the sites have added photoalbums and blogs and other miscellaneous crap. MySpace has been hitting the music scene hard and pushing themslves as a place for bands to share their music.

Livejournal is just for journalling. You can still select friends based on whose stuff you want to read or who wants to read you but it's not really the same networking idea as the other sites.

I have a MySpace account and I mostly agree with all the negative things that people say about it.
But I also think it has a lot to do with why you have an account there in the first place?
If you are looking to make friends or to find a date, then sure, youâre not going to have much luck.
But would you really expect to from a site like that!
I originally went on there along with my girlfriend as a way of âkeeping an eye onâ her daughter.
Sheâs 13
Her daughter thinks itâs fun that we have accounts.
Weâve had âcompetitionsâ to see who could get the most friends and picture comments etc.
Iâve even taught her the basics of Photoshop so she could make her pictures âuber coolâ
Most of my friends consist of âfamousâ people and cats and dogs.
With some worthy causes like pit-bull rescue and other animal rescue sites.
Iâve even got several of my dpc prints up there with links direct to my dpc store.
And according to my referral reports, I probably get one hit a week from those links.
So itâs not too bad.
Sure, some of the people are really annoying and you canât read their pages or understand their music, but you donât have to have them as friends or visit their pages.

Thatâs all I can be bothered to type :-)

Geeze! This is the 2nd time today I finding on my photography message boards that people hate myspace! LoL

The only reason i have one, is so that I could find old friends. I don't add people I don't know, and I guess I am lucky that I don't get spams or stupid requests.

I did however find a few old friends that moved away since graduation, and it's been great getting back in contact with them again.

I'm not on it to make pals.... that's what I have Live Journal for! ;)

Do bands get some kind of consideration or kickback for pushing MySpace? I went to a concert a couple months back (nobody really big, but a big show for this area), and all four bands made a big "MySpace is the coolest thing, check out our space, yada, yada" plugs. I wondered if this was just pop-culture, me-too, follow the crowd coincidence, or if myspace was giving them some insentive to drive traffic to their "spaces".

I don't think so, but I could be wrong.
I just thought they did it for some free advertising.
There's a lot of potential customers on myspace.

like i said in my poem i often got emails to the address i had used for myspace saying "theres this cool new band that you will like (i don't know what gve them that idea) who has just joined myspace - check them out".
That is probably the consideration these bands get for advertising the site, free myspace spam for the bands.

I must admit that I haven't received one single piece of spam from a band or anyhting else to do with myspace.
My girlfriend has received a couple of PM's or something from men wishing to meet her though.

i dont think so [re: band kickbacks]--i think it's just a convenient and easy way to market and promo--and keep a fan base running. at least that's what my friends' bands use it for. there was an interesting article about the whole myspace deal in last month's issue of wired that gives a bit of insight into the creation and whatnot. and from that point of view, it is fairly impressive that 2 dudes, (much like our D&L) started that site from nothing but the idea of consolidating a mish-mash concept of other popular sites--which has in two years--become a leviathan in the internet world. hey, more power to them. i\'m sure it has gotten out of control, no big surprise there, but when you become as ginormous as they have in such a short period of time, i suspect it can't be helped.

i dunno, like i said, it's just a way for me to talk, joke and stay in touch with my friends. i've never had any problems such as being kicked off, crashing, spamming, any of that stuff--who knows why--maybe because my page is as bland as whitebread....i just could care less about all the froofy stuff you can do to it. i guess i can see why people would be haters if you let all the extraneous things like the whiney, angsty-emo, cheesy freakies get to you...i just dont. i dont let them get to me in real life, i'm certainly not going to pay one whit of attention to them on the web. but i agree that sometimes it is just plain fun to hate popular things. i still hate barney. and i think dating sites are creepy. and country music. and air force ones. pate is disgusting. etc., etc. perhaps i will write a song about all that stuff. ;)

Nothing wrong with a nice pâté if you have some good bread and wine to wash it down with! :)

Thats it!! You've all convinced me to go out and start a myspace site ;) *gigglin* I've never been one to do what i'm told so the fact that y'all hate it is motivation enough for me to go out and do it..or at least see what the fuss is about.. funny thing is: I signed up yesterday before I saw this thread ;) *let the addictions begin.. thanks Alecia :P *

~twirls off to MySpace~

@ frisky: yes, well, i can certainly see how having a nice slice of ciabatta and a delightful glass of pinot would, in fact, help the disgusting slime on the way down...but i daresay i would be quite upset to lose all that good stuff as it made its way back up! hehe. ;)

@ roz: my pleasure chica, that's just how we roll. let the games begin! :)

@ elli: i know, god, i'm such a rebel! :D
