I thought that Mavriks self portrait was pretty cool
...so I tried something similar tonight...still need to improve, but here is my best shot so far, what do you think?

your shirt is overly lit.
Perhaps if you have worn a dark coloured shirt, so your face would be the main focus of the photo?

Or bring the shirt up to the same exposure in the other two by either a) opening the aperture a bit more or b) using a longer timer on the two moves (edit c) or use a brighter light)
Nice shot, funny to see my name in the title of a post! lol
2 moves is hard - too hard for my 8 second max shutter.

I like the way you set up your expressions with a smile and a frown framing the "neutral" expression. neat idea! |

I realized after the session that I should have worn a black shirt, oh well, I'm going to try again later...
I first tried a smile and a frown, then I got the idea of neutral, smile and frown, kind of like the good guy on one shoulder and the bad guy on the other...
I get some great ideas from this site, great creativity here, I'm glad you all like the shot...
settings:
F/5.6
8 sec
ISO 100
candle on a bar stool in front of me at waist level
used flash on low with piece of paper in front of it for difusser

If you flash, one will be solid.

hey hey mavrik, you're getting famous! I tried this technique too, but I don't have anything to show for it since I was trying it with more challenging shots with 3+ full body poses, which as you mentioned, is really tough to get with only 8 seconds. It was fun trying out the timing of the moving and it was very challenging too. your shot was quite excellent and worthy of imitating. |

Get help...as in an assistant.
1) Flash (first .1 second)
2) move to position 1 for 3 seconds as assistant turns on 60W bulb
3) assistant turns off 60 W bulb
4) move to position 2 as assistant turns on 60W bulb for rest of time.
if you do it right, it's flash, 3 seconds, move, 3 seconds. it gives you 1.9 seconds to move. should be enough. the light is off during the moves to eliminate the blur.

I used a similar technique in this picture My Black Magic Woman
My wife (the model) did a great job keeping her head still during this 13 second "marathon" exposure. It was on my top 4 for quite some time. The light in the middle is just a small tea candle.
