They are out in force around any open water here on the upper Mississippi especially around the dams where the water doesn't freeze. Not the greatest shots. I'm gonna get more tommorrow when I'm not so rushed. I was on my way to work when I got these.

There must be literally hundreds and hundreds this time of the year around the river. Any place you can find open water or a dam, they will be there.

Given a pretty day and a 500mm lens and all day to shoot you could have a book or calendar of fantastic images.
It's upclose these critters are impressive - and BIG.
Shot last january at the National Aviary. I go each year, and the pics keep getting better. This was shot thru a window with an inexpensive lens. Not the best pose either.

I guess they are not native to your area?

We get them in Central Florida too. I haven't been out to look for them yet but I know there is a nest in Winter Park.
I took this one at the Maitland Bird of Prey Center.

These are incredible, I have spent one day on the river already this month trying to get shots. The day I was there, they were over on the other side of the river, and I'm sure you realize just how wide the Mighty Mississippi is, I just couldnt reach them with my 40-150. Next trip I hope to see a few flying in the air or in the trees on my side. Great photos of a truly amazingly beautiful bird.

I wish I had a good telephoto lens. The 75-300 I have is way to slow at 300mm. It's hard to get good action shots with but I manage to get a few. I'd love to have a 500mm but that's a little out of my budget. Besides, having cheap lenses makes me more patient and work twice as hard to get good shots.

Sometimes they do not play nice.

BC is not too bad a place to capture eagles. Three Bald ones survey our pasture regularly. They perch and nest in a cedar tree above a sheer cliff on the side of the mountain bordering our property. Their cry is often the first thing I hear in the morning.
These images are taken with a Canon EF 70-200 mm L f/2.8, some with the addition of an 1.4x converter.

Dave, They are all excellent. I love the variation in the juveniles. Great shots. Van |
