I remember reading the ulterior motive in a post a couple of pages later.
Perhaps "explicit" was the wrong word for the very first post, but probably apt to describe its ultimate purpose. |

GeneralE's correct, that's it in a nutshell. Thanks for reading my previous posts, GeneralE.
There were some side-tangents, like, what are some alternative ways to possibly bring some extra money in for D&L's trouble. One thing I think everyone at DPC agrees on is that D&L deserve something for their ingenuity. |

To answer the original question, not enough to put up with people like us. ;o) |

All this talk about D&L being "holier than thou" to allow us to be here......
Think about a store - I'll use Safeway just as an example.
I do believe a Safeway store could ban me from entering their property - after all, it is THEIRS, not mine. But why on earth would they want to do that without a really good reason (like I'm in the habit of spraypainting their goods once a week)????
They wouldn't ban me for walking on their floor, breathing in their air and admiring their lovely merchandise, would they?
They WANT me there for a damn fine reason - my money!
If D&L make no profit from this (yeah, right), then perhaps they thrive on the satisfaction of the immense popularity of this site.
Chances are, however, they are making money (as they should be!!).
In either case, they are not running this site just to make US happy, and I feel NO pressing need to be on my knees kissing their feet everytime some improvement is made. Such improvements are just part of the way a successful enterprise of any sort STAYS successful.
I happily pay my membership fee and obey the rules, but I am NOT a charity case because I use this site.

I still don't see why would some SC get upset about us discussing this topic, yes we know this is a private company and is not/will not publish their profit/loss, but we didn't ask them to do so, did we? People are discussing politics, doesn't mean that they should run the country or tell politicians what to do, people are free to discuss any topic they want, it's called freedom of speech, as long as no one is hacking into D&L private files.
I strongly disagree that anyone is doing members or free users any favors on this site either, yes $25 is not a lot of money, and yes there are free members, and yes there are forums, but I don't believe this was done out of the goodness of anyone's heart, each one of these activities drives more visitors to the site, which increases the revenues (or the potential revenues) generated from sponsors and advertisements. Hey, Hotmail is free isn't it? Google is Free, isn't it? Are they doing us favors too? No, but the more people visit their site the more money they make at the end of the day.
Yes we appreciate so much having Hotmail and Google and I personally appreciate so much having DPC, but Hotmail and Google also appreciates having their (FREE) users, so it should be noted that DPC also appreciates their users (both paid and unpaid). That doesn't mean that people have any specific rights in here (other than what the site agrees to provide), certainly they have NO rights KNOWING how much money the site makes, but definetely have the right to wonder and freely discuss any non-offensive topic in these forums. |

I haven't read the last 2 pages worth because I just don't care much but one humorous point for me is that I've a full-time career. I get up, go to it and work and then try to run a photography business on the side. Hell, sometimes I don't know if I'm coming or going. I go to see my accountant and still can't tell you how much I'm losing or making in any given month. This doesn't kill me (yet) because I have my career to help me make it. Now why in the hell does anyone think that D&L or any other business has numbers like P&L statements at their fingertips. Most of the time it seems like you only generate a P&L once a year since its such a moving target. I'm not meaning to make fun but I wish I knew at any given time whether the $1,000 in my business account was really profit or whether I'm going to go 3 weeks without a paying shoot so that I could just spend the grand on my marketing postage for next month and not be in the hole.
Its a business or a labor of love or something. Hell, if anyone wants to know why not offer to pony up $50,000 to D&L to buy into the business. If they accept it then I guess they're not making a bazillion dollars. If they turn it down, try raising your offer. I'm sure the business accountant will be glad to show you the most recent P&L after you contribute to his/her salary.
Oh yeah, I think Slippy is rude and impolite and what were those other things?? Smelly or something.

I think $25 a year is a meer pittance. For $2 a month? what else can you get? Not a good cup of Starbucks, maybe 2 downloads off of Napster, possbily a cheeseburger and a small Coke somewhere. It is a curiosity to wonder about the "business profits," but I certainly feel I get my money's worth quadruple fold. I'd gladly pay an increased yearly fee with no questions asked.
Oh, I got kinda side tracked. Maybe I should start a "Do You Feel You Are Getting What You Pay For on DPC?" thread.

My opinion:
YES to D&L reaping profits.
NO to SC members referring to us as a charity cases and telling us to just be thankful for D&L's kindness.
If you don't understand my NO stance, read my previous posts. |

I would like to make a small addition to this thread. Having not been around yesterday I missed out (I'm usually on top of these types of threads!) but I read over it and although I have many thoughts and opinions, I get the feeling that this thread is tailspinning into oblivion.
But on thing that stuck out was Muckpond stating that D&L could boot whoever they wanted at anytime and they were being ever benignant in that they aren't kicking people off the site left and right. I would just like to say that I feel that that is now a wholly true argument. Yes, they could kick people left and right, but if they did, I believe it would deter many people from joining while simultaneously the site would see a decrease in activity. No one wants to belong to something where one little slip (no pun intended) or mishap could result in them being kicked off.
Sorry if this is completely and totally irrelevant but it stuck out to me at least. I'll reserve my own personal opinions on this thread to myself.

LOL! That's a typo because I originally had "idiot" instead of MENSA. |

You don't have to act like that. I was merely voicing my opinion of your original question. Thanks for dragging things down to the level of namecalling. I suppose anyone who disagrees with you is an "idiot." |

anyhow, going back to your poor use of semantics, I wouldn't be calling you "that" I would have been saying don't behave like...
You see? Semantics. |
