I am curious on how people photograph smoke so well. Some make it look so thick and milky. What kind of lighting is best for smoke? where should it be positioned? what type of smoke is best to use, cigarette, cigar, shisha, etc...? any helpful comments would be great. also, what length of exposure is best?

Take a look at aperture and shutter speed settings some of them use...

Take this one for example:

Aperture 18, Shutter speed 1/500 (very fast for the aperture) and flash light (which is a very strong hard light) from the back side.

just the one I wanted to talk to. Your picture is the reason I finally made a post about this. Very nice. I did notice your aperature and exp. Were you in a dark room with just a flashlight backlighting the subject, or a bright room w/ more light behind than in front?

You would have to ask Peete or Labuda for that information!! Only thing Peete said is that he used an external Flash unit, but I don't know about the ambience light.
