Is it going to be possible for me to get a decent shot for this out of my p&s? I dont have a Dslr, so all I have is a Hp850. Is there any trick that might help me on this or am i better off doing phobias?

Use maximum zoom, widest aperture, and keep the camera-to-subject distance much shorter than the subject-to-background distance. You should be able to achieve good subject isolation.

Besides what Kirbic mentioned, use the Macro mode on camera, keep the subject at the minimum distance your camera can focus (10cm for HP 850), you will be amazed at how shallow the DOF will be. Try out on a Chess board with pawns at different squares, it actually lets you see things more clearly.. you might even end up submitting one of those trial shots .. good luck!

Darn - I was a week too early with this shot:

I rented the 70-200 2.8 for our trip to the zoo.
Would this have done ok?

A very nice photo. I think it would have done pretty well.

How wierd that you would say that! LOL....Last night I practiced on chess pawns and chess peices. Although that isn't going to be my entry, they do look real nice as thumbnails, but I figured duplicates on that so didn't bother. I think I also have something a bit more unique then birds, wildlife, drops, and twigs too. So we shall have to see how it fairs. I have several choices of them to make, so I am still undecided whether to change it to the other, but for now, I am in.

I also think that fotomann_forever has a whole lesson on DOF which is interesting. I don't know how to do links on here yet, so someone can maybe share that here too.

Oh, and not for nothing, but another Shallow DOF ll thread was started yesterday when I had questions about DOF myself.

These are (relatively) shallow DOF entries I took with my Olympus P&S.

I was planning on entering Phobia, as i had a good idea. But I got a good idea that didn;t require me going out in the cold and snow that works for DOF 2...so the entry is in.

However, another side i haunt has a new challenge...nature in black and white. So outside i go anyway LOL

I get excited when I read the challenge description until I come to that word that's always there. Creative.
Where do the great winners/photographers get their ideas? Just rambling. Lack of sleep does that to me.

i have to start thinking about using other things ...... ;)

Well, I am definately changing my entry. It is really good as it stands, but it is also a bit too plain I think for this crowd. LOL....

I have three different other ideas. Maybe 4. One definately out of my style or realm. Maybe I will try that one. Just thinking out loud here, but after more research in the history of DOF contests here, and in study of what this site expects, I think a new plan of action other then "yeah, its a great PLAIN OLD DOF shot" is needed.

I am also going to "try" and refrain from posting my scores. I think it jinxes things! LOL....

I need a plane ticket and a model to do mine right... oh well perhaps something else will work :-) Plenty of time left to come up with something!

LOL...

Well, I think I will try the ideas I have that are "free" first. My out of realm idea will cost me, and not sure I care to do that this time around.
